Teaching Paragraph Writing with Traffic Lights

I’ve got to set down and really buckle down with Charlie and the things he needs to learn so he is ready for the rest of his School years. With him going into 3rd this year I am still not sure he knows all he needs to know. I am always looking for new and unusual ways to teach Charlie. Paragraphs are something we need to work on this year so we will be using this tip Teaching Paragraph Writing with Traffic Lights. I would like to know if you had heard of this and if so what did you think about it? Have you used Teaching Paragraph Writing with Traffic Lights or something like it in your household? If so Please share the links for both 2nd and 3rd grade.

Using color and visual cues when teaching almost any topic can be helpful to students. You’ll love this colorful, hands-on tip for helping students learn how to write paragraphs. Ready…set…go!!

  1. Cut up red, green, and yellow paper into strips. Cut across the paper horizontally so that the strips are long enough for students to write sentences on.
  2. Label the green as the topic sentence, the yellow as the supporting details, and the red as the conclusion.
  3. Next, write a paragraph using their color-coded strips. (Note: it’s fine for students to use more than one strip of a color – especially for supporting details.)
  4. After your student has written all the sentences on their strips, have them glue their strips to a piece of light colored paper in the order of an upside-down traffic light.
  5. Students will then read their paragraph aloud to make sure it’s cohesive and gets the point across.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie, and David Cates
