7 Tips when facing the flu season

I’m not sure if anyone in your home has had the flu yet this year but to help us prepare thought I would share tips from Dr. Gustavo Ferrar. We have been lucky not to have caught the Flu. Thank the lord.

My neighbor’s 7-month-old son had the Flu as well as my father who ended up with the Type A Flu. My dad  spent a week in the hospital from the Flu. Now that the flu has hit close to my home  I wanted to share 7 Tips when facing the flu season that can help us all out.

Before I share the article with you I would like to ask you a question. Have you heard of Dr. Gustavo Ferrar or Dr. Gus as people call him. If so have you read his book? If not is this book something you would like to read?

With the recent flu epidemic sweeping our nation and the closure of schools around the United States, we want to help you arm yourself against these nasty bugs! There are affordable OTC’s and easy steps you can take to help prevent and fight against these illnesses naturally, even before you get a sniffle.

We focus on “natural” in many of these tips because most over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are combined with other unnecessary medication.  We tend to think that more is better so we go for the ones labeled “Max” or “Extra Strength” and those are the ones usually combined with medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Too much acetaminophen can damage your liver. Every year over 80,000 people go to the emergency room due to an overdose of acetaminophen and 25,000 get hospitalizedSo, stay away from combination medications—you don’t need them. 

I would like to offer you  7 Tipwhen facing the flu season you can use with yourself and your family.

Tip 1: Basic things first—consider the Flu vaccine and wash your hands frequently.

Tip 2: Take a good blend of immune support herbs such as Echinacea, Golden Seal, Astragalus, and Andrographis, available in any health food store. The best one and my favorite is Tropical Sage, unfortunately, it is not widely available.

Tip 3: keep your nose clean moist. Use Xlear saline nasal spray with xylitol to wash away microbes right in the nasal passages and reduce bacterial adhesion! This one is a must.

Tip 4: Probiotics, or “good bacteria”, help the immune system as well as the digestive system, so make sure you are taking those regularly.

Tip 5: Drink ginger tea with lemon and honey. The best method is to simmer ginger slices to bring out the antibiotic effect. Add lemon and honey, each adds to the cold and flu-prevention effect and makes it taste delicious.

Tip 6: Garlic is also a strong antimicrobial and can be minced and sauteed to enhance a variety of meals. Or mince it and add it raw to salsa for a delicious and health-boosting treat.

Tip 7: OTC for night time cough and runny nose—Diphenhydramine (12.5 mg or 25 mg) or Chlorpheniramine 4 mg at bedtime. 

Working these seven simple and easy to use tips into your regular health routine in the classroom, work, and at home will help prevent colds and flu, and keep you one step ahead this season.
