Math Plus Reading Workbook: Summer Before Grade 4 (Summer Link)

Charlie and I finally had a nice long talk about school this year and what he would like to get out of 4th grade. As well as how scared Charlie is that he will fall behind in the work they are doing. Because Charlie still struggles with math and reading. So the other day I mentioned this to Davids mom Sherry and when Sherry  was in Sams Club the other day Sherry picked up a new workbook for Charlie to use this Summer.

Yesterday before Charlie went out to play we got out his new workbook which is called Math Plus Reading Workbook: Summer Before Grade 4 (Summer Link) and we started browsing through the workbook when Charlie found a couple pages he wanted to work on. This surprised me as I thought I would have to fight to get Charlie to do any work.

The pages Charlie picked out to do in math was Rounding Hundreds and Tens which I wasn’t sure Charlie could do it. Although he did the whole page by himself and once he was done and I checked it the entire page was correct. I was so proud of  Charlie that I couldn’t wait to tell David. Once Charlie finished he went and worked on a page with three digit addition and I didn’t know Charlie even knew how to do 3 Digit Addition and once he finished this page and I graded it it was also all correct.

Thhis morning in math we are going to work on our Multiplication tables from 1 to 7. Because Charlie should know from 1 to 6  but I want to do a refresher course then start teaching him his 7’s. As I want Charlie to know all the way through 10 before school resumes and if possible 11 and 12’s would be nice as well although I am not pushing Charlie to know them.

Once Charlie finished his math he went and got one of his Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and sat down to read a couple chapters in in. I didn’t ask Charlie to read to me because I didn’t want to upset him when he was working. Although Charlie surprised me and read to me from the book and he did really well and didn’t stumble like he has in the past. I am thinking it is time to get a book which is a little bit harder for  Charlie to read as I want Charlie to push himself but not get frustrated and give up like David did as a child.

Once Charlie finished reading 2 chapters in Diary of a Wimpy Kid  I asked Charlie to come back and look through his workbook with me as I wanted Charlie to do some reading pages inside the book. I was so surprised when Charlie sat right down and started looking for things to do. Because in the past Charlie would have argued with me although I am telling you Charlie is growing up and I am so proud of him.

For reading Charlie and I wrote a book report on the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid he is reading and also did a couple pages on reading comprehension. Once Charlie was finished we worked punctuation. Then I wrote out a couple questions about the book Charlie is reading and Charlie had Charlie  answer the questions  in complete sentences and use correct spelling.

On the words he misspelled we will be using them on a Spelling test next Friday as I want to build up Charlies spelling before school resumes. So I am looking for a list of words our children should know in both 3rd and 4th grade. If  you have a list of Spelling words or  know where I can get a list please leave me a link to the page as we need to get started on spelling as soon as possible.
