Homeschool: Spelling Resources

I would like to share Homeschool: Spelling Resources with you. I’m creating Charlie for Spelling. I’ve been watching Charlie read and work on his books. I’m noticing more and more what words he doesn’t know.

Along with how hard, it is for Charlie to sound out words the correct way. The other day when we were at the              Dollar Store, I picked up Popsicle sticks. I thought we could use in arts and crafts.

Chenille Kraft® Wood Jumbo Craft Sticks, Assorted, 500/Box

I received an email from Education.com. They had a set of wooden blocks, which they put words. You can see the post on sight word Jinga here.

I could go out and pick up wooden blocks like that and make our own Jinga Game. Instead, I’m going to use Popsicle sticks we have which would be cheaper.

Not only that but I can find Popsicle sticks anywhere. As we learn the words, we’ll be printing them out on the popsicle sticks which will take up less space. Or Charlie can use paper on the sticks and redo them every so often.

Popsicle can be purchased in different colors. Allowing us to separate our spelling words into different categories. Once I finish making Charlie’s set, and he sees what I did Charlie can create a set for my niece.

Payton will be learning to read soon. Or Charlie could create a list of words for David who has trouble reading. Charlie can put the words David uses at work on his sticks.

Each night Charlie and David can sit down together and practice reading the words as well as spelling and writing them out. This new activity would make an excellent way for David and Charlie to spend time together creating a unique learning experience for them.

My question for you is have you done something like this in your home? If so, what did you use? Did you do it for Spelling or another class? I’m also thinking about doing this exercise with math problems. A

Charlie needs to practice his multiplication. instead of spending money on Flash Cards we could use the Popsicles and put match facts on them for Charlie to study in math.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
