  • National Eggnog Day is a long‑standing holiday tradition in the U.S., celebrated annually on Christmas Eve.
  • Eggnog is typically made with milk, cream, sugar, whipped eggs, and spices. Sometimes a splash of brandy, rum, or bourbon for those who like a little extra cheer.
  • Eggnog has deep historical roots, tracing back to medieval Britain’s “posset,” a warm spiced milk drink enjoyed by monks and aristocrats.

How people celebrate

Here’s a cozy, classic eggnog recipe that brings all the holiday warmth without any fuss. It’s rich, creamy, and exactly the kind of thing you want to sip when the world slows down a little.

Classic Homemade Eggnog

Ingredients

  • 6 large eggs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (plus more for topping)
  • Optional: ½–1 cup bourbon, rum, or brandy

Instructions

  1. Whisk the eggs and sugar in a medium bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar until smooth and slightly pale.
  2. Heat the milk In a saucepan, warm the milk over medium heat until it’s hot but not boiling.
  3. Temper the eggs Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly. This keeps the eggs from scrambling.
  4. Cook the mixture Pour everything back into the saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly and reaches a silky, custard-like consistency. Don’t let it boil.
  5. Add cream and flavor Remove from heat. Stir in the heavy cream, vanilla, and nutmeg.
  6. Chill Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Eggnog tastes best cold and even better the next day.
  7. Optional: Add spirits Stir in your choice of bourbon, rum, or brandy before serving.
  8. Serve Pour into glasses, grate a little fresh nutmeg on top, and enjoy.

If you want, I can also give you a cooked-safe version, a non-alcoholic version, or a dairy-free twist. Just leave me a comment with what you’re looking for and I will get to work on it.
