A sea otter pops to the ocean surface along the Pacific coast, surrounded by strands of giant seaweed called kelp. The otter floats on its back as it grasps a spiny sea urchin–one of the otter’s favorite foods.
When Sam Clemens was 21 someone told him that the coca plant had amazing powers, so he took a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans. He was going to continue to Brazil, but he never made it to South America. However, the steamboat journey reminded him of a childhood dream to be a riverboat pilot, and he persuaded a current boat captain to teach him.
