Midterms can feel overwhelming for both students and parents. In fact, a recent report revealed that nearly 80% of students fail their first four midterm exams, a staggering number that underscores how important preparation and support truly are. The good news? With the right tools, strategies, and mindset, students can approach exams with confidence. Here are practical tips to help your child, especially if they struggle with learning challenges to succeed academically, mentally, and physically during midterm season.
Support Students with Learning Disabilities
Studying for exams can be particularly tough for children with learning disabilities, but targeted strategies make a world of difference. Break study sessions into smaller, manageable chunks instead of long marathons. Use multisensory tools like flashcards with visuals, read-aloud software, or color-coded notes to reinforce key concepts. Parents should also communicate with teachers about study guides or practice tests that align with their child’s unique needs. Small, consistent efforts can boost comprehension and reduce frustration.
Master Study and Time Management Techniques
Effective studying isn’t about cramming, it’s about consistency. Encourage your child to create a simple, realistic study schedule that spreads learning across multiple days. Tools like timers or planners can help them stay on track, while techniques such as active recall, quizzing themselves, and the Pomodoro method, 25 minutes of focused study followed by a 5-minute break, improve retention. When students learn how to manage their time, they feel more in control, which helps reduce test-day anxiety.
Create a Supportive Home Environment
Parents play a huge role in shaping the atmosphere around exam prep. A quiet, distraction-free study space can make a big difference. Show support by checking in regularly, offering encouragement, and celebrating small wins along the way. Even something as simple as preparing a favorite snack or offering to quiz them on vocabulary words can show your child, you’re in their corner.
Promote Healthy Habits for Focus and Stress Relief
Academic success goes hand in hand with physical and mental wellness. Help your child build habits that set them up for success:
- Sleep: Ensure they’re getting 8–10 hours of rest, as sleep is critical for memory consolidation.
- Nutrition: Fuel their brain with balanced meals rich in protein, whole grains, and healthy fats. Avoid excessive sugar and caffeine, which can lead to crashes.
- Movement & Breaks: Encourage short walks, stretching, or a quick dance break to re-energize during study sessions. Physical activity reduces stress and helps sharpen focus.
Encouragement is Key
Midterms are not just about grades, they’re an opportunity to build resilience, discipline, and self-confidence. By providing the right mix of structure, support, and encouragement, parents can empower their students to not only survive midterms but truly thrive.
