I don’t know about you but on March 9th it’s National Meatball Day #NationalMeatballDay. I wish I had #HomemadeMeatballs this evening for dinner. In our home we always purchase Frozen Meatballs. Would you want to celebrate dinner with me and if so what would you like with your Meatballs and why?

Spaghetti & Meatballs might be okay but then I was thinking Mac & Cheese but my family has never had Swedish Meatballs have you? Charlie hasn’t even had Egg Noodles so with this meal Charlie would be able to try two new dishes.

If you don’t know what Swedish Meatballs is I’ve shared a recipe with you below. Although, if you have a recipe for Homemade Meatballs or have a recipe you like leave me a comment so my family can check the Meatballs out please.

For a lot of people me included Meatballs are probably a gift from the Heavens. Did you know there are early recipes for Meatballs are found in ancient Chinese, Arabic and Roman texts and every culture seems to have their own version! From Beef, or Pork, or Veal which are the most popular, but Meatballs can be made with Chicken, Fish or even Vegan. Let’s all rejoice on March 9th in honor of National Meatball Day

Why People Love National Meatball Day

Even picky eaters can find something to love and we all know there is something about their playful flavorful nature that makes Meatballs a perennial favorite for kids and adults alike. You may not know what you want to eat but chances are, though, that once you see a few succulent, Meaty orbs sitting in front of you, you’re going to want to dive right in!

Every area of the world has its own traditions and history surrounding Meatballs including Frikadellers, Kofteh, Polpette, Albondigas! Or whatever the name Meatballs all contain Meat, Spices and a lot of love which come together to create savory Meatballs of goodness.

Meatballs play well with so many other types of food and Sauces. Why limit yourself to Spaghetti and Meatballs with a Tomato Sauce when you could have Creamy Curry Sauce which would transform Vegetarian Kofta; a Herby, tangy Chimichurri which would take your next meal to the next level.

Recipe for Swedish Meatballs

Prep Time: 1 0minutes minutes Cook Time: 20minutes minutes Total Time: 30minutes minutes

Servings: 6

1 pound ground beef

1/4 cup panko bread crumbs

1 tablespoon parsley, chopped

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

▢ cup onion, finely chopped

½ teaspoon garlic powder

⅛ teaspoon pepper

½ teaspoon salt

1 egg

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon butter

Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Egg Noodles

Instructions 

In a medium-sized bowl, combine 1 pound ground beef, 1/4 cup panko bread crumbs, 1 tablespoon parsley, 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, ¼ cup onion, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ⅛ teaspoon pepper, ½ teaspoon salt, and 1 egg. Mix until combined.

Roll into 12 large meatballs or 20 small meatballs. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter. Add the meatballs and cook, turning continuously until brown on each side and cooked throughout. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil.

Add 4 tablespoons butter and 3 tablespoons flour to the skillet and whisk until it turns brown. Slowly stir in 2 cups beef broth and 1 cup heavy cream. Add 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard and bring to a simmer until the sauce starts to thicken. Salt and pepper to taste.

Add the meatballs back to the skillet and simmer for another 1-2 minutes. Serve over egg noodles or rice.
