Texas Among Top 10 U.S. States Where ‘Fender Benders’ Lead to Fatal Outcomes
A new study reveals that Texas records the highest number of fatal crashes involving vehicles that sustained only minor damage.
The research by Steve Gimblin Personal Injury & Car Accident Lawyers analyzed state-level data from 2019 to 2023 using the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Crash Data Analysis and Statistics (CDAN) platform. The study identified the states with the highest fatal crashes involving vehicles recorded with ‘minor damage’.
Texas ranks first with an average of 3.05 fatal minor vehicle crashes per 100,000 residents, 162.9% higher than the national average of 1.16 minor vehicle crashes per 100,000 residents. Between 2019 and 2023, the Lone Star State recorded an average of 904 fatal minor damage vehicle crashes among its 29,658,211 residents. Crashes peaked in 2021 (1,007) and were lowest in 2019 (844).
Looking at the study, a spokesperson at Steve Gimblin Personal Injury & Car Accident Lawyers commented:
“Texas continues to stand out for all the wrong reasons. The data shows that even crashes labeled as ‘minor damage’ can quickly escalate into fatalities. With the state’s vast highway network and high traffic volumes, drivers often underestimate the risks of lower-impact collisions. The findings serve as a stark reminder that there’s no such thing as a harmless crash.”
Table of Extended Results:
