Before I begin my morning, I wanted to share two #Holidays that have passed but still can be celebrated. November 12th was National French Dip Day #NationalFrenchDipDay which both Charlie and David like a lot.
As for my brother I don’t know if he likes French Dip Sandwiches or not but with Charlie being gone and all David does for me I was thinking of going to Arby’s for dinner this evening and getting David a French Dip Sandwich to surprise David with because he has to work late tonight and wouldn’t have to make anything when he gets him.
November 12th is also National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day #PizzaWithTheWorksExceptAnchoviesDay which David would also enjoy as long as there isn’t any Onions or Bell Peppers on the Pizza. Do you think I should get David the French Dip Sandwich or the Pizza with the Works except Anchovies and why?
If you don’t feel like going out to eat tonight, I’ve included a recipe for a French Dip Sandwich for you but no, Pizza recipe because everyone has their favorite Pizza and even though it’s National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day you might prefer a different Pizza like I would.
Recipe for French Dip Sandwich:
A French Dip Sandwich is made with tender roast beef piled onto crusty rolls, served with a flavorful au jus dipping sauce. You can prepare it quickly with deli beef or go the slow-cooker route for melt-in-your-mouth meat.
Classic French Dip Sandwich Recipe (Slow Cooker Style)
Ingredients (serves 8):
4 pounds chuck roast
½ tsp kosher salt & ½ tsp black pepper
10.5 oz condensed beef broth
10.5 oz condensed French onion soup
1 medium yellow onion, sliced
12 oz light beer
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 sprig fresh rosemary
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
8 French rolls
½ cup butter
Instructions:
Season & Brown: Rub roast with salt and pepper. Brown each side in a skillet over medium-high heat.
Slow Cook: Place beef broth, onion soup, onions, beer, garlic, rosemary, and Worcestershire in a slow cooker. Add roast. Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours until tender.
Rest & Slice: Remove roast, let rest 15 minutes, then shred or slice thinly.
Toast Rolls: Butter rolls and broil until lightly golden.
Assemble: Pile beef onto rolls. Serve with the cooking juices (au jus) in ramekins for dipping.
Fast French Dip (Ready in 10–15 Minutes): If you’re short on time, try this version:
Use deli roast beef (1 lb) instead of a whole roast.
Heat beef in beef consommé (10 oz) with a sautéed shallot and a touch of flour for thickness.
Place warmed beef on baguette or hoagie rolls, top with Swiss or provolone cheese, and bake briefly until melted.
Serve with the extra au jus for dipping.
Tips for the Best French Dip
Bread: Choose sturdy rolls (baguette, hoagie, or French rolls) that won’t fall apart when dipped.
Cheese: Provolone or Swiss are traditional, but you can experiment with Mozzarella or Gruyère.
Au Jus: Skim fat from the broth before serving for a cleaner flavor.
Make Ahead: The beef can be cooked a day in advance and reheated in its juices.
Whether you go with the slow-cooked chuck roast or the quick deli beef shortcut, you’ll end up with a comforting, savory sandwich perfect for dipping into rich, beefy broth.
Thank you,
