September 15 International Dot Day #DotDay

The Mommies Reviews

I always love being able to share new facts and important people with my family which can be turned into #teachingmoments like September 15th International Dot Day #DotDay. This was a new #Holiday I wish I had knew about when #homeschooling Charlie.

Since learning should happen every day even if our children have graduated, I couldn’t wait to let David and Charlie know about International Dot Day and why its celebrated each year after originating from the book “The Dot” by Peter. H Reynolds someone my family hadn’t heard of until we learned about International Dot Day another #teachingmoment for us.

In 2009 a teacher introduced the book to his class to promote creativity, courage, and collaboration. International Dot Day encourages people of all ages to express themselves through art including writing drawing and even music.

Did you know International Dot Day serves as a global celebration of creativity and innovation, inviting everyone to make their mark in the World we live in. Grab some art supplies and a copy of the book and let’s get to creating dot art for our home.

International Dot Day is a perfect opportunity to build a homeschool lesson that blends literature, art, personal growth, and creativity. Here’s a ready-to-use lesson plan that celebrates the spirit of The Dot while encouraging your learner to make their mark:

International Dot Day Homeschool Lesson Plan

Objective

To inspire creativity, self-expression, and confidence through art, storytelling, and reflection, using The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds as the foundation.

Suggested Duration

Half-day or full-day lesson (flexible based on age and interest)

Part 1: Read & Reflect

  • Read Aloud: Begin with a read-aloud of The Dot. If you don’t have the book, you can find a YouTube read-aloud version.
  • Discussion Prompts:
    • What does Vashti learn from her teacher?
    • Have you ever felt unsure about something creative?
    • What does “make your mark” mean to you?

Part 2: Make Your Mark Art Project

Choose one or more of these engaging art activities:

  • Dot Painting: Use paper plates or cardstock to create concentric circle paintings starting from a single dot.
  • Collaborative Rainbow Dot Display: Each family member creates a dot, then combine them into a mural.
  • Tints & Shades Circles: Mix one color with black and white to explore color theory while painting dots.

Part 3: Creative Writing

  • Prompt: “I made my mark when…” or “If I could inspire someone like Vashti…”
  • Encourage storytelling, poetry, or journaling based on personal experiences or imaginative ideas.

Part 4: Musical Expression (Optional)

  • Create a simple rhythm or melody using instruments or household items.
  • Let your child compose a “Dot Day Anthem” that celebrates courage and creativity.

Part 5: Growth Mindset Reflection

  • Use positive affirmations like “I am creative,” “Mistakes help me grow,” or “I can try again.”
  • Discuss how trying something new—even imperfectly—is a step toward growth.

Part 6: Showcase & Celebrate

  • Host a mini “Dot Day Gallery” at home.
  • Take photos or videos to share with friends or family.
  • Optionally, register your celebration on the International Dot Day website for global participation.
