Life is funny now that Charlie has graduated I find myself thinking more and more about #Homeschooling and what we would have been able to study by thinking outside the box. Which is why I wanted to share another #Holiday with you that falls on September 3rd National Doodle Day #doodleday.
I’ve created a Homeschool Lesson Plan: for National Doodle Day #DoodleDay for you turning this Holiday into a creative celebration of imagination, expression, and fun! This is a full lesson plan tailored for homeschoolers of all ages:
Theme: National Doodle Day
Objective: Encourage creativity, self-expression, and visual storytelling through doodling.
Warm-Up Activity: Brain Break Doodles
- Give each student a blank sheet of paper and a black marker.
- Prompt: “Draw one continuous squiggly line across the page. Now turn it into something!”
- Encourage them to find shapes or characters within the line and build from there.
Main Activity: Daily Doodle Prompts
Use this doodle prompts to inspire your learners. For September 3, choose a prompt like:
- “Draw your dream treehouse.”
- “Invent a new animal by combining two existing ones.”
- “Design a superhero whose power is kindness.”
Let kids doodle for 15–30 minutes. No erasing allowed—embrace the imperfections!
Creative Extension: Doodle Challenges
Choose one or more of these:
- Shape Challenge: Only use triangles or circles to create a full scene
- Family Logo: Design a doodle that represents your family or homeschool group
- Sidewalk Chalk Mural: Take it outside and doodle on the driveway or sidewalk as a collaborative art piece
Cross-Curricular Tie-In
- Language Arts: Write a short story or poem inspired by their doodle.
- Science: Doodle the life cycle of a butterfly or parts of a plant.
- Math: Create doodles using geometric patterns or symmetry.
Reflection & Sharing
- Host a mini “gallery walk” at home.
- Let each child explain their doodle and what inspired it.
- Optional: Share on social media with #DoodleDay to join the global celebration.
If you want to keep the creativity flowing all year? You can print monthly doodle prompts that comes from Rock Your Homeschool—they’re perfect for open-and-go homeschool fun.
Now, I would like to ask you a question. Would you like me to help you build a printable version of this plan or add more subject integrations? If so leave me a comment with what your looking for and I will get to work on it.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
