September 3 National Skyscraper Day #NationalSkyscraperDay

Holidays Homeschool Resources

Charlie and I thought we would let you know September 3rd ius National Skyscraper Day #NationalSkyscraperDay. Even though Charlie and David don’t much care for heights that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t be able to think #outsidethebox and use National Skyscraper Day as a #teachingmoment in our home.

I would like to invite you to join my family as we celebrate National Skyscraper Day and share a fun Homeschool Lessons Plan with you. If you have resources on #Skysccrapers we can use in #Homeschooling please leave me a comment with how to check out these resources.

On September 3rd the holiday marks National Skyscraper Day, honoring the birthday of architect Louis Henry Sullivan, who was often called the “father of skyscrapers.” National Skyscraper Day is a perfect opportunity to dive into architecture, engineering, and urban history with your homeschoolers. Here are some creative and educational ideas to bring the day to life:

STEM & Engineering Activities

  • Build Your Own Skyscraper: Use craft sticks, glue, and imagination to construct a model skyscraper. This hands-on activity teaches structural integrity, problem-solving, and design thinking.
  • Earthquake-Proof Challenge: Explore seismic bracing techniques and challenge kids to design a tower that can withstand a simulated shake.

History & Architecture

  • Skyscraper Timeline: Create a visual timeline of famous skyscrapers like the Empire State Building, Burj Khalifa, and Shanghai Tower.
  • Architect Spotlight: Learn about Louis Sullivan and other pioneers like Frank Lloyd Wright and also Zaha Hadid.

Art & Design

  • Name Graph Skyscraper: Use graphing and geometry to create a skyscraper using the letters of your child’s name—a fun math-art crossover.
  • Design a City Skyline: Let kids sketch or paint their dream city skyline, incorporating architectural styles from around the world.

Research & Exploration

  • Watch kid-friendly videos about how skyscrapers are built and the science behind their design.
  • Explore virtual tours of iconic buildings like the Chrysler Building or the Transamerica Pyramid.
