September 4 National Newspaper Carrier Day #NewspaperCarrierDay

Holidays Homeschool Resources

Here I am a dollar short and a day late again but I couldn’t let September 4th pass without sharing the #Holiday celebrated today for the newspaper which brings us to National Newspaper Carrier Day #NewspaperCarrierDay.

I don’t know about you but my friends and family used to throw newspapers. I also watched the son on Father Knows Best when he had a paper route and also Leave It To Beaver. Do you remember those TV Shows and there newspaper routes?

#Homeschooling our children allows us to think outside the box so this morning I thought we would celebrate National Newspaper Carrier Day with the Lesson Plan I’ve created below for you to use. If you have other resources relating to newspapers leave me a comment so I can add them to our post.

National Newspaper Carrier Day – Homeschool Lesson Ideas

Remember September 4th is a fun opportunity to teach kids about the unsung heroes who deliver the news and the evolution of media. Here are some engaging homeschool lesson ideas tailored for different age groups:

K–2 Activities

  • Read-Aloud & Discussion: Share the story of Barney Flaherty, the first newspaper carrier hired in 1833. Ask kids what it might feel like to deliver newspapers early in the morning.
  • Role Play: Let kids pretend to be newspaper carriers, delivering “news” to family members.
  • Craft Time: Create a mini newspaper with drawings and simple headlines.

You can find printable worksheets and reading activities designed for this age group on Teachers Pay Teachers.

Grades 3–6 Activities

  • History & Research: Explore how newspaper delivery has changed over time—from kids on bikes to adults in cars.
  • Writing Prompt: “Imagine you are a newspaper carrier in 1900. What’s your day like?”
  • Vocabulary & Grammar: Use this ESL lesson to reinforce reading comprehension and grammar skills.

Cross-Curricular Ideas

  • Math: Calculate how many newspapers a carrier might deliver in a week.
  • Geography: Map out a newspaper route in your neighborhood.
  • Media Literacy: Compare print newspapers with digital news sources. Discuss how the internet has changed the way we get information.
