Texas Among Top 10 U.S. States Where Internet Fraud Is Widespread

Attorney/ Lawyers

Texas has the ninth highest rate of internet fraud complaints in the U.S., according to a new study.

The research by personal injury law firm Simmrin Law Group analyzed internet fraud complaint data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) across all 50 U.S. states between 2020 and 2024. The average number of fraud reports per 100,000 residents was calculated to determine which states are hit hardest by online scams.

Texas is placed tenth among U.S. states with the most IT fraud reports, logging an average of 1,165.8 cases per 100,000 residents from 2020 to 2024. This rate is nearly 15% above the national average of 1,016.92. The Lone Star State witnessed its highest number of fraud cases in 2024 with 464,703 incidents, while the fewest were reported in 2020 with 274,105 incidents.

Looking at the study, a spokesperson from Simmrin Law commented:

“The high rate of IT fraud in Texas raises serious concerns about digital security and consumer protection. These elevated levels of fraud can lead to identity theft, financial hardship, and ongoing stress for affected individuals.

“To combat these challenges, it’s essential for state leaders to invest in robust cybersecurity infrastructure and public awareness campaigns. Encouraging collaboration between local agencies, tech companies, and residents will also help ensure better fraud detection and stronger defenses against future threats.”
