6 Novels For Your Homeschool Fifth Grader

Homeschooling is a good relief to parents who wish to keep a close eye on their children. Charlie is in fifth grade and suffers from Dyslexia and ADD. As a homeschool mom, I can monitor him tightly as I perform other tasks at home and also blog.

Through my experience in this article, we will review six novels for your homeschooled fifth grader. They are recommended for all children, regardless of their status

The Toothpaste Millionaire by Jean Merrill by Jean Merrill

Rufus Mayflower with the help of his friend Kate McKinstry had a plan to make many gallons of toothpaste at the cost of one tube at the store. They developed each step, and when Rufus was in eighth grade, he had made more than a million, and he made a million of sales. This story helps build our financial and mathematical calculations in the business sector. It also illustrates the black and white can work together and become successful.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary

The book first published in 1965. Raph, the mouse, lived in California with his family. He and the family enjoyed messy places since this is where they got their daily food. However, Raph is afraid to go out and see the city because the housekeepers who want to keep their homes tidy keep him on the check. Keith has a new motorcycle, and Raph wants to see it and also confirm if there is any food left behind on the bike.   When he tries to climb onto the bike, he falls into a waste bin but its Keith who saves him because he loves mice.

The Buffalo Knife by William O. Steele

  1. The Buffalo Knife

An adventure fiction story of Andy his family and some neighbors decided to make a journey of many miles across the Tennessee River to settle in a new home. They will cross the river by the use of a flatboat which is quite dangerous.

  1. Gentle Ben by Walt Morey
  2. Gentle Ben is a story large bear called Ben and Mark a little boy. After the death of his brother Jamie, Mark found a new friend to love the Alaskan big brown bear. The Alaskan wilderness is known for good relationship between the humans and the bears, which helps Ben retain his newfound friend. Other people are afraid of the bear due to his size. The story exciting and will help improve literature for the fight grade homeschooling children.

Snow Treasure by McSwigan

Snow Treasure is a story of four Norwegian children Lovisa, Peter, Helga, and Michael. Peters Uncle and father need to smuggle some gold past the Nazi commanders to a waiting ship to America. It is decided all children in Peters school and is above ten years will carry the gold past the German soldiers. When schools reopen, the doctors create a fake outbreak and paints children with red dots on their body. Thus, the schools will not open, and the illegal gold trade continues. Will the Nazis know about this trade?

Owls in the family by Farley Mowat

  1. Chapterbook: Owls in the Family
  1. Murray, Bruce and Billy find two horned owls that become part of their pet collection. Wol and Weeps are smarter than Mutt the champion dog. Wol collects and brings dead rats to the family feast table where he bullies the postman. Weep remains the comical owl who does not want to learn how to fly. He is afraid of everything except Mutt.

 All of the Novels above are recommended for fifth grade. They are educational and will help your child read fluently and learn more grammar.

Charlie has improved his reading skills through some of these adventurous books which will keep the child busy. However, remind your child to read a new book once he is through reading one book. Writers use different writing, language, but it is all simplified for your child to understand.
