How to Teach Kids Numbers 1 to 10

Most of the activities and advice below also work with higher numbers, as well.

  1. Counting up to 10 using books, worksheets, songs, videos or just by sitting with your child and going over the numbers over and over because kids learn better through repetition.
  2. Counting down from 10 to 1 so you could put out Ten pencils out and take one away at a time until you get to the number one. Then have five erasers and group them into different groups then ask your students which group is one.
  3. Ask your students to find items in the classroom that there are just one of that item.
  4. Understanding and responding to spoken random numbers. Call out numbers and sing them and say them in different voices, so the children get used to hearing number one.
  5. Being able to say random numbers when shown the figure by holding up one finger. Or one book or anything you can find that you have just one of this item.
  6. Recognizing and responding to numbers written out as words. Find some worksheets with the number one on it and have the children trace and color the numbers.
  7. Learning to write the numbers Grab a notebook and pencil and have the students write down 1 and also teach them to spell one.
  8. Have them lay on the floor and make a one with there body let another student trace them.
  9. Get out chalk or shaving cream and let the children practice writing the number one while spelling it. Ask them how many colors there are.
