Christmas Gift Guide: Gifts for Babies

Good morning, I wanted to share a new Christmas Gift Guide; Gifts for Babies: Computer Engineering For Babies which is a new book published by Chase Roberts. Chase was kind enough to come and share his thoughts with us on the book.

Computer Engineering for Babies launched on Kickstarter at the beginning of September, and raised over $240,000 with 5,000 backers.

The idea originated when I noticed my boy’s fascination with buttons, switches, and levers. Often he would have me hold him next to a light switch just so he could flip it on and off, over and over again. Then whirl around each time to confirm that the bulb toggled. He was so fascinated by the cause and effect of a switch and a light bulb. At around the same time, I had an incredibly hard time keeping him entertained during church meetings. Somehow the two ideas merged and I fell in love with the idea of a simple and silent book with buttons and lights. And maybe, just maybe, he might pick up a little intuition for computer logic.

The book has two arcade style buttons and a large LED. I wanted everything to be big and kid friendly. For instance, the buttons have a great tactical feel, with that nice addicting “click” when you press them. Each page of the book changes the logic that lights up the LED. For example, one page of the book introduces an OR gate and when you press the red button OR the yellow button the LED lights up, while the AND page requires you to press both buttons to light the LED.

In my opinion, one of the best parts of the book is the lack of bells and whistles. Unlike every other book with buttons that you own, this book doesn’t have a speaker to play animal sounds, or fart noises. This is a book that you can take to church, and your kids can play with it quietly! At least in theory.

Computer Engineering for Babies is available for preorder here. I apologize, this isn’t available until after Christmas, so on Christmas Morning you’ll have to make a substitute and read Essentials of Vector Physics instead.

Thanks for reading this far! If you have any questions, comments, or creative insults, you can reach me here.

COMPUTER ENGINEERING FOR BABIES

PRE-ORDERS ONLY. Estimated Delivery is March 2022.

You missed the Kickstarter? Not a big deal. You can still order now, and your book will ship out immediately after the Kickstarter rewards are fulfilled.

The book has 6 pages. Each page has a different function; WIRE, NOT, OR, AND, XOR and LATCH. Sensors in the book detect which page you are on so that the buttons can have different functions depending on the active page.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
