Campfire Day – First Saturday in August

4th annual Campfire... - Holidays That Might Get Overlooked | Facebook

The first Saturday in August is forever proclaimed to be Campfire Day and Night! Why, day and night, you might ask? It’s simply because a Campfire can and should be enjoyed any time, day or night.

Did you know most people start a Campfire at dusk, to enjoy its warmth and light late into the evening, or even early morning hours but a Campfire can be equally enjoyable, without the Mosquitos, during daylight hours. To properly enjoy Campfire Day or Night, start your Campfire around 4:00 in the afternoon and keep it going late into the evening.

This is a very special time to enjoy the relaxing calm and peacefulness of a Campfire with family or friends. Campfires can be enjoyed in your backyard, at a Camp Out, by the Shore, or j anywhere that you can build a fire on the ground, or in a firepit.

Campfire Day is to be celebrated on the first Saturday in August for a couple of reasons. First its celebrated on a Saturday, because most people are off work, and don’t have to work the next day. They can stay up late to really enjoy the fire.

Early August was selected, because the Sunset is already beginning to be noticeably earlier. Children in some states, will soon go back to school. We want the kids to enjoy and cherish the memories of a Summer Campfire, too.

Enhance the Campfire Experience:

  • Cook dinner over the Campfire. Hot dogs and Aluminum Foil dinners are real hits.
  • Cook S’mores and Roast Hot Dogs.
  • Got kids? Teach them how to build and manage fires safely.
  • Tell Campfire Stories
  • Sing a few Campfire Songs.

Have a safe and happy Campfire Day and Night!

History and Origin of Campfire Day:

Campfire Day is a very special day and night which was created in 2017 by Bob Matthews of Rochester N.Y., and author of  Holiday Insights.com. In researching Holidays for over a dozen years, Bob was simply amazed that no one had created a special day to celebrate Campfires.

According to Bob Matthews, the creator, of this Holiday IS NOT a “National” day.

New Beers Eve

Celebrate New Beer's Eve April 6 | NonStop Celebrations

Today is New Beer’s Eve. Sit back and enjoy a bottle or two of suds.

For over a decade (1920-1933), Beer and Alcohol were banned in the United States. This ban was set in place by the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. The 18th Amendment failed miserably. It was largely ignored. Millions of people turned to making their own Bathtub Beer and made Alcohol in Homemade Stills. Bootleg Beer and Alcohol, much which was smuggled in from Canada, caused the loss of millions of dollars in potential tax revenues.

The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment which took effect at 12:01a.m on April 7, 1933. On the evening of April 6th, anxious Americans lined up at breweries and distilleries to purchase legal Beer and Alcohol at the stroke of midnight. That night, someone coined the term “New Beer’s Eve“, and a new annual holiday was born!

We hope you thoroughly enjoy New Beers’ Eve. Please do so responsibly. If you drink, don’t drive.

Origin of International Beer Day:

The Association of California Brewers created this Holiday in 2007, in Santa Cruz, California.

From 2017-2012, the Association of California Brewers established this Holiday on August 5th. In 2013, they changed it to the first Friday of August. Presumably, they did this to allow us to celebrate, and not have to get up to go to work the next day.

National Clown Day – Saturday during International Clown Week

International Clown Week: always August 1 – 7

National Clown Day: Saturday of International Clown Week

Both International Clown Week and National Clown Day were created to give recognition to those funny clowns that make us laugh and smile. It is estimated that there are over 10,00 clowns in organized Clown groups, and over 20,000 Clowns world-wide. They all have one goal in mind, and that’s to make us happy.

On this day, Clowns around the world do what they do best…. they Clown around, holding events at malls, nursing homes, schools, and educational events.

Originally, this event was called “National Clown Week”. In 1991, the group Clowns of America renamed it “International Clown Week”, recognizing that there are many Clowns around the world, and this event should be a world-wide celebration.

You can celebrate just the day, or the whole week.

We hope a Clown or two brightens up your day, today!

Date When Celebrated : First Saturday in August

What happens the morning after you’ve had too much to drink? That right, you get a walloping Hangover. It only makes sense that  International Hangover Day is the day after International Beer Day.

If you celebrated yesterday then you had a great time celebrating International Beer Day, at least what you remember of it. The pounding headache, queasy stomach, and spinning room, is a sure sign that International Beer Day is fun, its over, and International Hangover Day has painfully arrived. Bring out the Aspirin, Tomato Juice, and a bit of the “dog that bit you”.

The History and Origin of  International Hangover Day:

We researched this Holiday deeply, but didn’t positively identify the creator. But, we are pretty sure we know who did. Follow our logic……..

It is very clear that the Association of California Brewers created International Beer Day in 2007, in Santa Cruz, California. We also know that International Hangover Day was created shortly after, and is established as the day after International Beer Day. Both days are called “international” days. So, we have our theory as to who created this special day. What is your guess??

National Lighthouse Day

Celebrate National Lighthouse Day on August 7th » St. Augustine Social

National Lighthouse Day Holiday is always observed on August 7th.

National Lighthouse Day honors and commemorates a beacon of light that symbolizes safety and security for boats at sea.

On August 7, 1789, through an Act of Congress, the Federal Government took over responsibility for building and operating our Nation’s Lighthouses. The government recognized the importance to ships at sea to find safe harbor during fog and storms. Over the years, Lighthouses have saved many ships, and an untold  number of lives.

Throughout Maritime history, Lighthouses have shined their powerful, sweeping lights through the fog and storms, allowing ships of all kinds to find their way back to the port during inclement weather. With the advent of radar and GPS technology, Lighthouses have taken a back seat in guiding ships to port. However, they remain the universal symbol of safe harbor to ships and communities that rely upon the sea for their livelihood.

There are numerous local and national Lighthouse Preservation Societies and Lighthouse Organizations. They serve to preserve and promote Lighthouses, and their Historical significance to communities, and to the Nation.

Enjoy National Lighthouse Day by visiting a lLghthouse, or learning more about your local Lighthouse Preservation Society. Or, read a book about Lighthouses.

History and Origin of National Lighthouse Day:

On this day in 1789, the U.S. Congress enacted legislation allowing the Federal Government control over the creation and maintenance of Lighthouses. This special day evolved out of this event, and in recent years, through efforts to preserve Lighthouses as a important Historical symbol in America.

In 1989, the U.S. Congress proclaimed National Lighthouse Day.

Professional Speakers Day

Amazon.com: August 7 - Professional Speakers Day White Ceramic Coffee Tea Mug - 11 oz: Kitchen & Dining

Today is Professional Public Speakers Day, a day to recognize the importance of those who stand up in front of us and share their knowledge and insight on an endless range of topics.

To be a speaker requires a very special and unique skill set. As soon as a speaker walks up to the dais, turns on the microphone, and opens his mouth, that unique set of skills becomes clearly apparent. Often a person has what it takes to talk in public, or is the expert in their field, but not both.

First you have to have the ability, and shall we say the nerve, to speak in public. All too many people have everything else needed to be a good speaker. To many, the thought of talking in public in front of a group is nothing short of terrifying. For some people public speaking comes naturally, while others have an inbred fear that takes tremendous will power and practice to overcome. Some people never get over the fear, and refuse to speak in public.

A speaker also needs to be knowledgeable on the topic to be discussed. Better still, experts in their fields. For speakers who allow a Q&A after the talk, the depth of this knowledge and expertise is essential, and is clearly on display.

Participating in this day is quite easy attend a Seminar or an event with a speaker. Make sure to give a heart felt applause after the speech. Another way to mark this day, is to speak publicly. Not quite ready to speak in public? Take a course in public speaking. You’ll be glad you did!

History and Origin of Professional Public Speakers Day:

There was so little information and documentation about this day, that we almost chose not to post it. But, we feel its important to recognize those who speak in public, and not just professionals, but all public speakers, for the bravery they display in talking in front of people and groups

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
