We survived another week in Public School

Charlie survived another week in public school. And this week has had a lot of ups and downs. But I think we may be on the right track now. Or at least I am praying we are.

As I talked to the teachers twice last week as Charlie had some homework that had to be corrected and he ended up mad at me and tore the paper up. So I sent a not to school with the paper. And when I picked up Charlie I asked if he had turned it in and Charlie said he left it in his locker.

So I let both teacher know what had happened and that Charlie should have to redo the paper but keep the 50 he got. As he shouldn’t be able to get a better grade after what he did.

Then I talked to the teachers about the books Charlie brought home to read this week. And they taught me about the “5 Finger Reading Rule” and if you haven’t heard of it ask me and I will go over it with you.

Then we discussed where Charlie was sitting as he has been talking and not completing his homework. And  so they will be moving Charlie to the back of the classroom by himself.

And I have to go and have his glasses fixed as his eyes have been bothering him a lot. And even Charlie has decided he needs his eyeglasses as well. Which is a huge step for Charlie.

Then he brought home his last spelling test and ended up with a 50 on it and I was upset as I knew he knew the words but he hadn’t studied as much as he should have.

So this week we have studied twice as much and I am anxious to see how well he does on todays Spelling Test. And also on his behavior log as he has 2 marks on it and if Charlie gets 2 more marks he drops down to a S. And they if he gets 7 marks on it he will go down to a N. So I am getting worried as I know if Charlie isn’t careful he is going to end up needing to repeat the 2nd grade.

So one thing I can say about this year that they didn’t do last year is they have gotten Charlie extra help in the classes he is struggling with. And they have even made sure we know which websites they are learning from. So he can pass the Star Test. Which is a requirement for 3rd grade.

So I would like to ask you how your children are doing in school both in public school and also private school. And let me know what your scared of happening or not happening.

And if you have suggestions on how to help Charlie with this anger and frustration Please share it with me. And if you know how I can help Charlie stay focused in school I sure can use some advice.

And in the  meantime I wish you a fun filled School Year just as I hope Charlie and I have. And I attended Curriculuim night last night and I can tell his teachers care and are on top of everything. The only thing I was upset about was they didn’t go over the new math they have the children doing. So I still can not help Charlie the way I need to.

And I hate that as it makes me feel like a failure. And we tried to redo one of his worksheets last night on rounding and the way I wanted to do it isn’t the way they do it in school Charlie said. So once again I felt like I was hitting my head against a brick wall.

So I may have to find a math tutor for Charlie. Just to get him through 2nd grade. So if you have a high school student that is good in math and knows the new math Please ask them to contact me if they would like to earn some extra money and do not mind tutoring a student.

And don’t ask me why I can’t get his sister Leslie to help Charlie out because I had her do that the other day and everything she helped Charlie on they ended up getting wrong. And I can’t have that happen again.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
