“Feeding a Family on $5 After a Hobart Day Trip”

$5 Lunches Chicken Cooking Recipes

8:00 A.M. — $5 LUNCH FRIDAY

“Feeding a Family on $5 After a Hobart Day Trip” has been on my mind all week because I knew Charlie and I had a lot to do on Thursday. David and I went to run errands yesterday morning and stopped for breakfast at Roots Cafe because I felt like I needed to stop in here. Come and read why this was a Godwink for me.

For David his ⭐ $5 Lunch Friday: Feeding a Family on $5 After a Hobart Day Trip was leftover Hamburger Meat and Fried Tater’s Granny Sherry had left over and SOS we had left over from the night before or Chicken from Lisa’s Chicken we had last night.

In our home this is what— Real Families do when creating a Real Budget for Real Life.

Remember some Fridays start with a plan. This one started with sore legs, a half‑cleaned porch, a dining room that is actually clean but still not ready for a home‑makeover show because there is a scooter in the middle of the living room, but when you live in a tiny Townhome all the space counts and things have to be put somewhere. David and I are still recovering from a day trip to Hobart that turned into a new beginning for Charlie.

But even on the days when life is loud, messy, emotional, and expensive — we still have to eat. And around here, $5 Lunches isn’t just a series. It’s survival. It’s creativity. It’s proof that you can feed a family without feeding your stress.

So today’s $5 lunch is inspired by:

  • The tiny truck
  • The Walmart run
  • The goodbye
  • The engagement
  • The exhaustion
  • The new phones
  • The cleaning marathon
  • The “we still haven’t made dinner” moment
  • And the fact that real families don’t always have time, energy, or money to cook a full meal

This is real‑life food for real‑life families.

THE $5 LUNCH: “The Hobart Recovery Meal”

This is a meal that feeds tired bodies, stretched budgets, and overwhelmed hearts and one we will be making once all the Leftovers are gone.

Ingredients (all under $5 total):

  • 1 box of Great Value Mac & Cheese — $0.50 which I can purchase now that C is gone because he will only eat Kraft Mac and Cheese. Spoiled child.
  • 1 can of mixed vegetables — $0.78 for my family I have to leave out because they will not eat Veggies ever.
  • 1 can of chicken (or tuna) — $1.12 I would use Chicken because David doesn’t eat Tuna and not tell Jr its canned Chicken which he says has a funny taste which isn’t true and it’s what I use when I make Chicken Salad.
  • 1 packet of ranch seasoning — $0.48 If you ask David or Charlie it has to be Hidden Valley but I’m on a budget and will get the Store Brand it will not kill them.
  • 1 loaf of clearance bread or rolls — $1.00 Total: $3.88 – $4.50 depending on store

Why this works:

This was a staple in my dad’s mom and dad’s home when I was growing up. I hope you try the recipe because on days like today, we don’t need gourmet meals we need done and we need comfort and more than that we need cheap and we need something everyone will eat without complaining.

And this meal hits all of that.

HOW TO MAKE IT (The Real‑Life Version)

1. Boil the noodles: Cooking Noodles is a meal I would wait for David to be home to make because I never know if the Noodles are done or not. While the noodles are cooking and your waiting, take a breath or go for a walk and get those steps in because we’ve earned it.

2. Add the cheese packet– Which I might skip because I’m not much for Cheese on my food and anyone who wants it can add it to their meal. Just don’t overthink it. Don’t try to be fancy. Just stir.

3. Add the canned chicken– Store brands are fine and we will be getting Protein without effort. Bless the protein which is a key part of my diet.

4. Add the mixed vegetables– Because we’re adults and we should try although in my house the guys would refuse to eat it, I will add a small can of vegetables to my dish.

5. Add a sprinkle of ranch seasoning: This is something Charlie will love and David to but again it’s something I might skip in my dish even though David and Charlie think Ranch the magic. This is the “my family thinks I tried” moment.

6. Toast the bread– Or don’t. No judgment. I might have White or Light Bread with Butter untoasted.

7. Serve it with love– Even if you’re serving this meal while leaning against the dishwasher because the dining room is still rearranged you’ve created a meal your family will be grateful for and be full while staying on a budget and cooking a 30-minute meal kids can help with.

⭐ THE STORY BEHIND TODAY’S $5 LUNCH

Rearranging the house yesterday and the Road Trip the day before to Hobart and back drained David and I. Emotionally. Physically. Financially and so much more.

As I said earlier Charlie, David and I squeezed into Larry’s tiny truck and yes, we squeezed. We shopped at Walmart. David and I tool Charlie and Mikayla out to eat lunch/brunch to celebrate Mikalya’s Birthday and their engagement. David and I dropped C off. He hugged me goodbye. Then we started home with the tears flowing faster than the rain.

David came home and cleaned like he was preparing for a magazine shoot. We dealt with the phone company messing up our phones AGAIN. We didn’t make dinner. We didn’t rest. We didn’t stop. We just avoided the ELEPHANT in the room Charlie being gone for who knows how long.

So today’s lunch isn’t just food. It’s a reminder:

You don’t have to do everything. You don’t have to cook big. You don’t have to spend big. You just have to feed your family. And sometimes the best meals are the ones that cost the least and mean the most.

HOW TO MAKE THIS A FAMILY MOMENT

Even when you’re tired. Even when you’re hurting. Even when you’re overwhelmed.

I let David sit with his Beer, Bear who is also lost without Charlie and his Beer. I didn’t ask him for anything. He earned the rest more than anyone else.

We feed and paid Bradley because he earned it and he helped keep David’s mind of Charlie and he is coming back today to help me more.

✔ Let Gerald eat later. He had gone somewhere with my sister and he’ll wander back eventually.

✔ I Let myself breathe. Because I deserve it just as you do..

✔ Let today be enough. Because it is.
