As a mom it’s hard for me to purchase things I would like to have even though I deserve them. One of the items I always struggle with is purchasing books because I know the money I would spend can be used for something else we need.

The other day David and I were in Walmart. After we finished our shopping I ventured over to the Book Section because there was a couple books I wanted to see if they had. While in the book aisle I picked up Danielle SteelA Woman’s Place: A Novel her newest book.

In the past when we were at Walmart I had put it back a couple of times trying to be responsible, but eventually I just decided to go ahead and get it. I figured I deserved the book because last month I’d been sick and honestly… I needed something that was just for me. No guilt. No overthinking. Just a small thing that brings comfort.

As a mom, I always want to be responsible, and since I figure that I work from home every single day, I don’t buy much for myself. I usually purchase drinks, only once or twice a week only if there on sale, and I never purchase lunches. But David buys energy drinks every day, and now that Charlie’s working, he buys a drink too.

So whenever Danielle Steel comes out with a new book, I always like to pick it up. But more times than not, I’ll go to Walmart and I’ll pick up the book and I’ll put it in the buggy, and by the time we get to the cash register, I’ve decided that I don’t need it. Because I don’t need to spend the money. Usually they’re around $20, and I can use that for a bill, groceries, or even take David and I out for a quick meal.

But the other day, since I’ve been sick more times than not last month, I just decided I would splurge and go ahead and put the book in the basket. Of course, by the time we got to the register, I talked myself out of it again. But this time David wouldn’t let me. He actually bought the book for me, and that meant more than the book itself.

It’s sitting on my bookshelf now, and I can’t wait to start reading it this week, even though I still have one from the past I haven’t finished yet. That’s okay though. They tend to stack up sometimes. Because during the winter, when it’s cold and I can’t get out the way I need to, I always end up thankful I have something waiting for me to read. And maybe that’s the real lesson in all of this—sometimes it’s okay to finally just buy the book.

Is there a book you have in your TBR ie To Be read pile you can’t wait to dive into?

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
