I would like to introduce you to a 5 part of series on our site which is called The Circle Remains Unbroken: and in this series we will be sharing Stories That Built Our Family: and we begin with sharing how a Home Is More Than an Address or at least it was for my family.
When people ask David, Charlie and I where home is, we usually think about an address. We think about the street we live on, the house or apartment we walk into every day, or the place where our mail is delivered. But when I look back over my life and the story of our family, I know that home has never been just an address.
Home is the people who fill those rooms. Home is the laughter that echoes through the walls. Home is the memories that stay with us long after the furniture is moved and the years have passed. For David and I we each have a home we remember but then when we think of Charlie its the same home our Mobile Home in Haltom City.
Some of the most important moments in our family’s story did not happen in big houses or during special occasions. They happened in ordinary places on ordinary days. They happened around kitchen tables, in living rooms, on porches, and in the spaces where we gathered together as a family. Those are the moments that built our home.
When I think about our family, I think about all the different seasons we have walked through together. I think about the places that held our memories, the rooms where our my children grew up, and the spaces where family members came together because they knew they belonged. A home is not measured by how much you have. It is measured by how much love lives inside it.
One of the things that stands out to me most is how our family has always made room for the people we love. It was never just about having the perfect house or everything being exactly right. It was about opening the door, pulling up a chair, and making sure people knew they had a place with us.
When my dad needed a place to feel at home, David made sure he had one. We had a three-bedroom trailer, and David set up a room just for my dad. It wasn’t just a bedroom. It was a reminder that he belonged. It was a place where he could come back to, where he knew he was welcome, and where he was surrounded by family. He even had a set at the dinning room table everyone knew not to st in.
Even when Dad would go back to Oklahoma, there was still a room waiting for him. That is what family does. Family makes space. Family shows up. Family says, “You belong here.” Those are the things that turn a house into a home. That is why our Mobile Home still has a place in my families hearts.
When I think about Charlie growing up, I think about all the everyday moments that seemed small at the time but became the memories we treasure. The toys left on the floor, the conversations at home, the routines we followed without thinking about them — those are the pieces of childhood that become the stories we tell later.
The funny thing about memories is that we often don’t know we are making them while they are happening. We don’t always realize that a simple dinner together will become something we miss years later. We don’t realize that a favorite chair, a certain room, or a familiar sound in the house will one day bring back an entire season of life.
But those moments matter. The little things become the big things. The ordinary days become the stories we hold onto. As our family has grown and changed, we have learned that home is something we carry with us. It is found in the traditions we continue, the stories we repeat, and the lessons we pass down to the next generation.
It is found in remembering the people who helped shape us. It is found in honoring the ones who are no longer sitting beside us but whose love is still part of our story. Every family has chapters. Some chapters bring joy. Some bring challenges. Some bring changes we never expected. But through every season, the love that connects us remains.
That is what makes a family strong. Not a perfect home. Not a perfect life. Not perfect circumstances. It is the willingness to love, forgive, show up, and keep the memories alive. Because at the end of the day, home is more than an address at least it is to my family.
Home is the people who love us. Home is the stories we share. Home is the memories we protect. Home is the legacy we leave behind. And as we continue telling the stories of our family, we remember that the circle remains unbroken.
Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed
