Homeschool Resources: Virtual Field Trips

Good morning, Charlie has been bored with working in workbooks this week. So instead of getting our schoolbooks out I thought we would go on Virtual Field Trips. Would you like to come with us? Also, if you have attended these Field Trips leave me a comment and let me know what you thought of this Homeschool Resources: Virtual Field Trips.

Virtual Field Trip to Hawaii Coffee Factory – Lion Coffee

All grades, with parental supervision

Hawaii may be best known for producing Pineapples and Macadamia Nuts – but did you know that Hawaii also produces coffee? That’s right, Kona Coffee groves thrive near the world’s largest volcano, Mauna Loa, on the big island of Hawaii. At today’s website, you can see how Kona Coffee gets from bean to cup.

When you get to the site you will be on the Learn tab and can view the first video. You will see the coffee groves, coffee flowers, unripe coffee “cherries,” and see how the beans are removed from the coffee fruit. Throughout the video you will learn how the beans are processed, sorted, and roasted to produce Kona Coffee.

The goal of this website is to bring you as close as possible to actually experiencing every inch of this spectacular natural wonder. Hence it features the latest in interactive panoramas: with many of the photos (if you use your mouse to scroll around) you will see an unbroken sphere of scenery not only on all sides, but also above and below.

To embark on this breathtaking virtual adventure, you can click on any one of the locations on the homepage. If you prefer to browse by geographic feature, you can use the “Favorite Views” drop-down menu at the top of the page.

Once you have arrived at a location you can either use the arrows to move between locations, or bring up a full list of locations by selecting the four boxes icon. Whatever method you choose to navigate the site, you will come away with an increased appreciation for this National Treasure.

Smithsonian National Zoo – National Zoo’s AnimalCams

Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

All grades, with parental supervision

Take a Virtual Field Trip to the Smithsonian National Zoo where you can see five animal exhibits streamed live through webcams.

When you get to the site you’ll see a menu of webcam exhibits that include:

  • Black-footed Ferret
  • Naked Mole-rat
  • Lion
  • Giant Panda
  • Elephant

Click on any one and a new page opens where you can view the live footage. Sometimes you can see the animals quite clearly, and other times they are out of camera range.

Remember that the Smithsonian National Zoo is on Eastern Standard Time – so if you visit after Sundown and before Sunrise Eastern time, it may be a little dark. Also, some have more than one camera, so you can click Cam 2 to see more.

In addition to viewing the webcams, you can scroll down for pictures and news that you can explore to learn more about the animals featured on these webcams.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
