Math Resources

I would like to ask you to check out the Recommended Website: Fact Navigator and Geometry from the Land of the Incas. If you have used these websites what did you think of them and why?

Age Range: 5-18 (Grades 1-12, with parental supervision) This commercial website, offers free lessons on how to learn the multiplication times tables from 0-9, through the use of mnemonic memory devices.

These learning tools help kids associate rhymes, stories, pictures and activities with arithmetic to make memorization easier.

The premise is to address the learning modalities of every student. Each lesson uses pictures for the visual learner, stories for the auditory learner and an activity for the kinesthetic learner who learns by moving, doing, and touching.

When you get to the website, choose from the multiplication facts shown to start off. Then check out the links at the top of the page:

  • Games
  • Learn
  • Teachers
  • Parents
  • Auto-Scored Quizzes
  • Resources

As we mentioned, this is a commercial website. The freebie is an introduction to their books, games, and other math resources available for purchase.

Recommended Website: Geometry from the Land of the Incas
Age Range: 15-18 (Grades 9-12, with parental supervision) This site offers an array of resources including animations, science, and Incan history in order to help students learn Euclidean geometry.

The Incas were a civilization in western South America near Cuzco, Peru. You may have heard of Machu Picchu, an ancient fortress city of the Incas in the Andes Mountains. The Incas were superb craftsmen and architect-engineers. Nazca Lines are geoglyphs (drawings on the ground) that are believed to have been created by The Incas during the 15th and 16th centuries. There are about 300 figures – among them are geometric shapes.

When you get to the website you’ll find geometry problems with step-by-step solutions, proofs, colorful animations, quizzes, puzzles, quotations, and more. Click on the featured ilustration that interests you or scroll down the page to find the “Table of Content” for more.

There is lots of content here – so much, in fact, that we weren’t able to review it all. Therefore, as always, parents should preview the site to determine suitability for your own children

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
