World Mental Health Day –

World Mental Health Day – Mental Health is a spectrum, so why don’t we treat it as such?

October 10th is World Mental Health Awareness Day. According to best-selling author and TEDx speaker Jaya Jaya Myra, mental health falls on a spectrum, and learning practical ways to deal with emotional pain and stress can help.

Jaya Jaya Myra says, “People are not either healthy or mentally ill – mental health is a spectrum between mental wellbeing, mental sickness and full-blown mental illness and where we all fall on this spectrum has a lot to do with what’s going on in life. Just like people catch a cold, people can become temporarily mentally sick when dealing with emotional pain or stress. Unless people are given the proper tools necessary to cope with adversity, stress, emotional trauma and hardship, this can lead to depression, anxiety and other forms of long-term mental illness. It’s time we start eliminating the stigma around mental health and start promoting ways to stay mentally and emotionally well.”

So what can be done? According to Jaya Jaya Myra, small simple steps can make a huge difference. Here’s her top three tips:

  • Cultivate a daily habit doing something you enjoy – the mind thrives on consistency, so do something every day that makes you happy.
  • Eat foods that boost mood and reduce stress – dark chocolate, bananas, salmon and other omega 3 foods, walnuts, almonds, chia seeds and more all help produce dopamine, which boosts mood.
  • Breathe deeply – lengthening and deepening the breath automatically reduces stress and resets the mind. Even 30 seconds will help (and for people who want to learn to meditate effectively, working with the breath is the first step).

  1. Thanks for your tips. Everyday my dog and I walk 5-10 miles.
I eat organic fresh fruits and vegetables every day. I meditate on the breath 20 minutes or more everyday. These consistent practices do create contentment and Joy.
