Texas Among Top 10 U.S. States Where High C-Section and Preterm Birth Rates Are Putting Expectant Mothers at Risk

A new study highlighted that Texas is the ninth most dangerous state for expecting mothers across the nation.

The research conducted by the Birth Injury Lawyers Group analyzed C-section and preterm birth rates across all U.S. states. It measured two primary metrics: the C-section Rate 2024 (scored out of 50 points) and the Preterm Birth Rate 2024 (scored out of 50 points). These metrics were totaled to rank the states from highest to lowest risk on a 100-point scale, with higher scores indicating greater maternity care concerns.

Texas follows in ninth place with a maternity risk score of 82/100. The Lone Star State had 390,506 births in 2024, with a C-section rate of 34.5% (scoring 46/50 for cesarean deliveries) and a preterm birth rate of 11.09% (scoring 37/50 for preterm deliveries).

Looking at the study, a spokesperson from Birth Injury Lawyers Group commented:

“The research reveals that Texas reported some of the highest risks for expecting mothers, driven by consistently high rates of C-section deliveries and preterm births.

“The data further suggests that states with higher intervention rates and premature deliveries tend to present more dangerous maternal care environments compared to those with stronger prenatal care programs and better maternal health outcomes.

“To avoid this situation, these states should invest in quality prenatal healthcare access, reduce unnecessary C-section procedures, and adopt maternal wellness initiatives aimed at reducing premature births.”
