Small Monday Homemaking Tasks When Life Feels Heavy

The Mommies Reviews

Some Mondays begin with a long to-do list. Others begin with a heavy heart. Today is one of those days where life feels a little uncertain. While my husband David and our son Charlie are spending time at the hospital saying goodbye to David’s dad and Charlie’s grandfather, I’ am’m here at home taking care of the little things that still need to be done.

I’m not just preparing clothes for the week, picking up the house, and trying to keep our routines moving forward. I’m also preparing my heart for a goodbye that I never wanted to face You see, this isn’t just saying goodbye to my father-in-law. Over the years, he became so much more than that.

He became like a dad to me, someone I loved, someone who was my friend, and someone who has been a special part of our family’s story. When life feels overwhelming, sometimes the small homemaking tasks become a way to find a little peace in the middle of the storm. Because after saying goodbye to my parents I couldn’t face another hospital room.

When everything feels too big, I try to focus on one small task at a time. Including gathering clothes for David, Charlie and I for the week. While I wait for David to come home so we can start a load of laundry. I just finished clearing off the kitchen counter and putting things back where they belong. While getting out the items we will need for dinner.

These little tasks don’t fix the hard moments, but they can help create a calm space while we process everything happening around us. Even during difficult seasons, life continues. There are meals to plan, schedules to manage, and everyday responsibilities waiting. Taking a few minutes on Monday to prepare can make the rest of the week feel a little easier.

Simple things like:

  • Choosing outfits for the week not only for visits to David’s mom’s but for the guys for work
  • Checking the refrigerator and pantry to make sure Gerald has food he can make when we aren’t home
  • Making a quick grocery list for lunch items for David’s mom
  • Picking up clutter in the main living areas and moping before I head out
  • Setting out items needed for busy mornings including tablets for notes we will need to take.

Which can help bring a little order when life feels uncertain.

One thing I’m reminding myself today is that not every task has to be completed perfectly. Some days, homemaking looks like a sparkling clean home. Other days, it looks like doing what you can while carrying a heavy heart. Both matter. A home is not made special because everything is perfectly in place. A home is special because of the love, memories, and people who fill it.

Today, I am grateful for the years of memories, the love our family has shared, and the little moments that become the ones we hold onto forever. I am grateful for a husband and son who can be there during these precious moments. I am grateful for a home that gives me a quiet place to reflect. I am grateful for the simple routines that remind me life continues, even during difficult days.

So if your Monday feels heavy today, remember this: You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with one small thing. Give yourself grace. Take care of what you can. Sometimes the smallest homemaking tasks are the very things that help us make it through the hardest moments.

Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed
