When Charlie was smaller he ate, slept and dreamed of wrestling. No, matter what we would be talking about somehow #wrestling found its way into the conversation more times than not. This is why I wanted to bring you a new series for #Homeschool What Kids Need to Start Wrestling: Beginner Parent Guide (Gear, Safety & First Steps.
If you’re new to wrestling, it can feel overwhelming at first—but the truth is, kids don’t need much to begin. But Wrestling is one of the most accessible sports for children, especially in the summer when families are looking for ways to get kids active, focused, and out of the house.
This guide breaks it down simply.
START HERE: YOU DON’T NEED EVERYTHING
One of the biggest misconceptions about wrestling is that you need expensive gear or a full program before starting.
You don’t. Most kids begin with:
- a coach or beginner class which you can find online
- basic athletic clothing and for Charlie he just used shorts, the tennis shoes he wore everyday and his favorite wrestling shirt
- a safe training environment for Charlie that was our backyard
That’s it.
BASIC WRESTLING GEAR (WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED)
Essential Items
- Wrestling shoes (for grip and safety) we never did purchase these but that is because Charlie didn’t take classes if your children do I would invest in them
- Athletic shorts which we got at Walmart or singlet isn’t something Charlie had or wanted
- Water bottle we bought these at the Dollar Store because they would get lost or left behind`
- T-shirt or compression shirt
Optional (but helpful)
- Knee pads
- Mouthguard (sometimes required)
- Small gym bag
👉 You do NOT need full competitive gear to start training.
SAFETY FIRST (IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS)
Wrestling is safe when taught correctly, but structure matters.
Always make sure:
- Training happens on proper mats
- A qualified coach is supervising
- Kids learn control before intensity
- No unsupervised “rough wrestling” at home
The goal is technique and discipline—not force.
WHAT WRESTLING TEACHES KIDS EARLY ON
Even in beginner classes, kids quickly learn:
- Balance and coordination
- Listening and following instruction
- Discipline and focus
- Respect for partners and coaches
- Emotional control under pressure
These carry over into school and daily life.
HOW TO FIND WRESTLING CLASSES (DFW / LOCAL AREA)
In North Texas, parents usually find programs through:
- School district wrestling programs
- Youth wrestling clubs
- MMA gyms with youth grappling programs
- Community recreation centers
You can also look for seasonal camps during summer months.
LOCAL CONNECTION
Some families also attend live events or tournaments to help kids understand the sport in real life. There are larger events in the area are sometimes held at venues like Dickies Arena, while most beginner development happens in local gyms and school programs.
Charlie and I used to attend local Wrestling events at the Haltom Theater and the American Legion in Haltom City hosted by a friend of mine. When I was in school I would watch the matches at my High School and also the Stasgecoach Ballroom.
HELPFUL BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS
If you want to support learning at home:
- Mind Gym: An Athlete’s Guide to Inner Excellence
- Youth wrestling beginner technique guides
- Sports biographies of wrestlers (great for motivation)
REAL TALK FOR PARENTS
Wrestling doesn’t require your child to be “naturally strong.” It teaches strength over time. Most kids start awkward, unsure, and unbalanced—and that is completely normal. Progress comes through repetition, not pressure.
If your goal is:
- confidence
- discipline
- focus
- physical activity
- structure during summer
Wrestling is one of the most complete sports a child can start with.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
