In my home I try and keep lunches under &5 for 3 to 4 people. I would like to invite you to have lunch with us as we will be having $5 DIY Ham, Crackers & Fruit Lunchable Sunday Prep Box. Before you ask no, I don’t eat Fruit but David does and depending on what Fruit sometimes C will as well.
Sometimes Sundays are loud and busy, in our home while other Sundays feel slower and softer. This is why I try and keep Sunday’s around here a grab and go day because Sunday afternoons usually turn into reset days.
Laundry piles up on the restroom or C’s room since he isn’t home, I’m usually looking for a missing shoe so I can go walking, and the kitchen somehow needs both a deep clean and dinner at the exact same time. Those are the days I start pulling together simple lunch boxes for the week ahead because even a little bit of preparation makes Monday feel less overwhelming.
$5 DIY Ham, Crackers & Fruit in ahomemade Lunchable-style box became one of our favorite Sunday traditions because it feels fun without costing much money. Charlie always thought opening Lunchable lunch kits at school was exciting, but buying several every week adds up fast, especially for a family. Making our own version at home gives us the same fun feeling while letting us use what we already have in the refrigerator.
The best part is that everyone can build their own little combinations. Charlie likes stacking his crackers high with ham and cheese like tiny sandwiches, while I usually end up sneaking extra cheese into mine while packing everything up. Some weeks we use strawberries, other weeks it is apple slices or orange wedges depending on what is on sale. These Lunchables never has to look perfect to work.
This is also one of those recipes that helps clear out the refrigerator before the new grocery week starts. A handful of crackers from one box, leftover deli ham, a few slices of cheese, and fruit that needs to be eaten suddenly become tomorrow’s lunch instead of food waste.
And honestly, there is something comforting about opening the refrigerator on a busy Monday morning and already seeing lunches waiting inside. Don’t you think so?
I wanted to let you know one reason I keep coming back to these simple prep boxes is because they remove some of the stress from the week ahead. When lunches are already made, mornings run smoother. There is less fast-food temptation, less waste, and fewer rushed decisions before school or errands.
Homemade versions also stretch groceries further. Instead of buying individual packaged kits, one package of crackers and a small amount of deli meat can feed several people for days. For families trying to stay on a tighter grocery budget this spring, small swaps like this really do help over time.
This recipe also gives kids a little independence because younger kids can help assemble their own boxes, choose their fruit, or stack crackers and cheese themselves. Those tiny kitchen moments become memories before we even realize they are happening and this is when memories are created.
And if you are building your own Sunday prep routine, this is one of the easiest places to start because it does not require cooking, complicated ingredients, or a lot of cleanup afterward.
For families wanting to make lunch prep easier during the busy summer months ahead, this is also a good time to grab extra reusable containers, divided lunch boxes, or insulated snack bags to keep homemade lunch kits cold and ready to go throughout the week.
Sometimes the simplest meals end up becoming the ones everyone remembers most.
Recipe: $5 DIY Ham, Crackers & Fruit Lunchable Sunday Prep Box
Ingredients
1 sleeve buttery crackers
8 slices deli ham
4 cheese slices, cut into squares
1 cup grapes or sliced strawberries
1 apple, sliced
4 small containers or meal prep boxes
Directions
Wash and dry the fruit well so it stays fresh longer in the refrigerator. Slice the apples just before packing or toss them lightly with lemon juice to help prevent browning.
Place crackers into one section of each lunch container. Add folded ham slices and cheese squares beside the crackers. Fill the remaining space with fruit.
Store the boxes in the refrigerator until ready to use. These work well for quick lunches, after-school snacks, road trips, or even easy park lunches during warmer spring afternoons.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
