My family would like to welcome you to the Lived-In Review series. This space was created for something simple, and that is real product testing inside a real home. Not marketing language, not polished descriptions copied from packaging, and not overly structured reviews that feel disconnected from everyday life. Just honest experiences with products as they actually show up, get opened, and are used in a normal household.
Some of the items in this series will be things I choose myself and others will be sent for review, but everything will be treated the same once it arrives here. It gets used in real conditions, in real routines, and is judged based on how it actually performs when it becomes part of daily life.
🦋 Why I Use a Butterfly Rating System
Most review systems rely on stars, and while stars are familiar, they tend to flatten everything into a number that doesn’t always reflect real experience. Two products can both be labeled as four stars yet feel completely different when you actually live with them. That gap is what I wanted to fix.
Instead of stars, this site uses a butterfly system because it feels more natural to how I actually evaluate products in real life. It gives space for experience, not just scoring. It allows my family and Suzzane to to be at the heart of every review.
🦋 How the Butterfly Rating Works
A single butterfly means a product did not really meet expectations in everyday use and may have been difficult to incorporate into a routine or did not perform the way it needed to in a real home setting.
Two butterflies means the product has some potential and may work in specific situations, but there were noticeable issues that made it harder to fully rely on in daily use.
Three butterflies means the product is solid and usable and generally does what it claims to do, even if there are still a few trade-offs that show up in everyday life.
Four butterflies means the product performs strongly in real use and fits comfortably into a routine with only minor drawbacks that do not heavily affect the overall experience.
Five butterflies means the product stands out in everyday life, works smoothly, and naturally earns a place in a regular routine without hesitation.
🌿 What These Reviews Focus On
Each review in this series is based on how a product actually behaves in a home environment rather than how it is described on packaging or in listings. That means paying attention to first impressions, how it feels to use over time, whether it becomes part of a routine, and whether it holds up in real conditions instead of ideal ones.
If something is confusing, inconsistent, or hard to verify, that is also part of the review because that reflects real-world experience too.
The reviews may be done by David, Charlie and I or our friends and family members and even the dogs at time just depending on what we are reviewing.
🌼 Transparency in Reviews
Not every product will come from a well-known or fully documented brand. Some items will have limited information available, especially those sold through online marketplaces or rotating sellers. When that happens, the focus shifts even more toward how the product actually performs rather than the company behind it.
The goal is not to promote or criticize brands, but to show what it is like to actually live with these products once they are in your home.
🦋 Final Thought
This series is meant to build into a trusted space where readers can come back and understand how products perform in real life, not just how they are presented in advertising.
Over time, this becomes less about ratings and more about lived experience, which is what matters most when you are choosing what to bring into your home.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
