In our home mornings upstairs usually start the same way before the rest of the house fully catches up. There’s that in-between quiet where everyone is waking up in their own rhythm, and I find myself heading straight for the coffee station before anything else can pull me in a different direction.
The Keurig sits right there on the bathroom counter, already part of the routine. I fill the water, grab a pod, and let it brew while I move around the bedroom getting my thoughts together for the day. There’s something steady about that sound—the machine working while the house slowly wakes up around it.
This time, I’ve been using the Great Value Classic Roast Coffee Pods, from Walmart which came from a very simple decision. Coffee prices just like grocery prices are getting higher, and I wanted something affordable that still felt like real coffee, not something watered down or disappointing. I picked it up mostly out of curiosity. It wasn’t a brand I had tried before, but it was sitting there at the store, and I figured it was worth a try.
I wasn’t expecting anything fancy. I just wanted something that worked for everyday mornings. The first time it brewed upstairs, I noticed the smell right away. It filled the upstairs in a warm, familiar way, not too strong and not too sharp. It didn’t overpower the room or linger too heavily, but it was enough to make the upstairs feel awake. That part alone made it feel like a good fit for my mornings, because I don’t always want something intense first thing in the day.
When I finally sat down with my first cup, I didn’t rush it. I just held it for a minute while sitting at my desk letting that first sip tell me what I needed to know. The taste surprised me in a good way. It’s smooth, more balanced than bitter, and strong enough to feel like coffee without being overwhelming. Some budget coffees can taste flat or leave a sharp aftertaste, but this one stays in a softer middle ground. It’s not bold in a dramatic way, but it doesn’t feel weak either.
What I like most is that it doesn’t fight the morning. It just fits into it. I tried the coffee plain at first so I could taste the coffee on its own and it wasn’t to strong and I could have drank it plain which is healthier for me. I added French Vanilla Creamer and it was so good but still needed a little bit of sugar. David likes it plain and Charlie and Bradley like it the way I do.
Upstairs, using the Keurig makes everything easier. There’s no measuring or cleanup beyond tossing a pod, and when the house is already moving with different people starting their own routines, that convenience matters more than anything. I can press a button, pour my cup, and still keep up with everything happening around me.
Downstairs, Charlie has his own coffee pot going, so the house ends up with two very different coffee routines happening at the same time. Upstairs stays quick and simple with the Keurig, while downstairs has the traditional pot brewing for a stronger, fuller batch of Coffee. Charlie is almost out of Folger’s so I plan on getting him Great Value Classic Roast Medium Ground Coffee. By purchasing both types of coffee works out well because everyone gets what they like without getting in each other’s way.
The price is really what makes this coffee stand out in the first place. Compared to name brands, it’s noticeably cheaper, but it doesn’t feel like I had to give up anything major to make the switch. It feels more like a practical choice than a sacrifice. It’s the kind of coffee you buy when you want to stretch your grocery budget but still keep your morning routine intact.
After using this coffee for a few days, I’ve started noticing that it just blends into my routine without me having to think about it. It’s there when I need it, it tastes good enough to enjoy, and it doesn’t feel like I’m missing out on anything by choosing it.
Most mornings, I end up with my cup in hand either standing at the counter or sitting down for a few quiet minutes before everything really starts. Sometimes it goes with breakfast, sometimes it’s just part of the early work rhythm before emails and writing and everything else takes over. It becomes that small moment where the day feels manageable before it gets busy.
Right now, I would say this coffee is something I would definitely buy again. It’s not a special occasion coffee, and it’s not something I would probably reach for when I want something richer or more bold. But as an everyday coffee, especially for mornings like these, it works. It feels dependable, affordable, and simple in a way that actually makes life easier instead of more complicated. And sometimes that’s exactly what a morning coffee should be.
Do you drink coffee? If so what is your favorite brand of coffee and why? How do you drink your coffee?
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
