When I first walked into the kitchen that evening after the Ribs had been cooking all day, my only goal was to make the sides we were going to have with the Ribs. Although, I had no, clue what to make because no, one ever wants the same thing in this house. This time I just picked out what I wanted that sounded good with Ribs.
I had no idea that one slab of ribs, two different seasonings, and an unexpected cooking partner would turn into one of my favorite memories—and eventually become an entire series here on TheMommiesReviews.com and that was fine because this showed me the LORD had a hand in our dinner.
If you’ve followed along with the first three articles, you already know the story. David, who usually cooks dinner in our home, was working late. Charlie, who normally helps me when I take over the kitchen, was upstairs with a migraine. I was preparing to make dinner by myself when Bradley came downstairs.
Instead of Bradley heading back to his room, which is Charlie’s room he pitched in without being asked. He took out the trash, washed the dishes, cleaned a light switch that had years of built-up dirt around it, and then noticed me getting ready to cut the slab of ribs in half.
Since David and Charlie have practically banned me from using knives after I’ve cut myself more times than I’d like to admit, Bradley smiled, took the knife, and cut the ribs for me. From there, we spread aluminum foil across the counter, lined up several bottles of seasonings, and started smelling each one.
After narrowing our choices, we selected two completely different dry rubs. One half of the ribs was seasoned with Prolific Butcher Shop Sweet & Smoky Dry Rub, a local North Texas seasoning with a slightly sweet, smoky flavor. The other half was seasoned with Adams Texas Style Smoked Brisket Low & Slow Rub, which offered a richer, more savory Texas barbecue profile.
Each half was wrapped tightly in aluminum foil, placed in its own Pyrex baking dish, and baked low and slow in the oven until the meat was tender enough to pull away from the bone. By the time dinner was ready, the hardest part wasn’t cooking. It was deciding which ribs everyone liked best.
To make things fair, each member of our family sampled one rib from each pan before sharing their opinion. Charlie immediately preferred the Prolific seasoning. He loved its sweet-and-smoky flavor and the caramelized coating that developed while the ribs baked. It reminded him of the kind of barbecue you’d enjoy at a backyard cookout.
David agreed. He appreciated the balanced sweetness and thought it had a classic barbecue flavor that would appeal to almost anyone. Which didn’t surprise me with David because he doesn’t like sweet sauces and this one wasn’t at all. Which is why Charlie liked it as well.
Gerald and I found ourselves reaching for the Adams-seasoned ribs.We both enjoyed the deeper, more savory flavor. Rather than covering up the taste of the pork, the seasoning complemented it, creating a rich Texas-style barbecue experience that left us wanting another helping.
Then there was Bradley. After helping prepare the meal from start to finish, he simply smiled and admitted he couldn’t choose a favorite. He liked them both. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that was probably the best answer of all.
Not every comparison needs one clear winner. Sometimes two great products can each shine in their own way. The Prolific seasoning is perfect when you’re craving a bolder barbecue flavor with a beautiful caramelized finish. The Adams seasoning is an excellent choice when you’re looking for a savory Texas-style blend that lets the meat remain the star of the meal.
We’ll definitely keep both of them in our pantry, and we’re already talking about trying them on hamburgers, chicken, pork chops, and maybe even a brisket. I wanted to remind you that real this series was never really about seasoning. It was about family.
It was about taking time to cook together, laugh together, and have conversations that probably wouldn’t have happened if we had all stayed in our separate rooms. Which is why Bradley and I are already planning another night in the kitchen together. We haven’t decided what we’ll cook next, but we both know we’ll enjoy the time just as much as the meal.
Those are the moments I hope to continue sharing through Front Porch Kitchen Conversations. Thank you for joining our family around the table—or, in our case, around the kitchen counter.
