For the first time in a long time I’m proud of myself. I feel like I’m on the right track in my weight loss journey. That is why I created The I Think I Can Walking & Water Challenge: July 1st was the first day in the I Think I Can Challenge– allowing me to Take the First Step and I did it and I feel betterl.
There is something different about this week as I’ve made it a point to drink water before I reach for anything else. I’ve also made it a point to walk anytime I go downstairs. When I finish a review I grab that item and go downstairs to put it in a tote which allows me to move.
For the first time in a long time, I didn’t wait for someone else to ask me to go walking. I made the decision on my own. Even last night when David was home and getting ready for bed I let him know I was heading out to walk. I went to the end of our building and back in. It wasn’t much but it was better than nothing.
This morning I plan on putting on my shoes and head back outside for another walk. That may not seem like a big deal to some people, but it is a huge accomplishment for me. Sometimes the hardest part isn’t taking the walk. It’s taking the first step out the door.
As I’ve gotten older, it has become easy to find reasons not to exercise. It’s too hot. I’m tired. I have work to finish. Maybe I’ll start tomorrow. Before I knew it, tomorrow had turned into months. That isn’t the case anymore because on July 1st I decided I wasn’t going to let those excuses win. I walked because I wanted to prove something to myself. I think I can.
By the end of the day, I had walked 4,206 steps during 45 active minutes. My Fitbit showed that I burned 129 active calories, 1,430 total calories, and covered 2.1 miles while active. Those numbers may not break any records, but they represent something far more important. They represent a new beginning.
Looking back over the past four days makes me smile because I can already see consistency starting to form. On July 1, I walked 4,679 steps. On July 2, I reached 4,644 steps. July 3 ended with 4,713 steps, and yesterday I finished with 4,206 steps. Together, those four days add up to 18,242 steps.
When I first started this challenge, I wanted everything to happen quickly. I wanted bigger numbers and faster progress. Now I’m realizing that healthy habits aren’t built in one day. They’re built one walk at a time, one glass of water at a time, and one decision at a time.
The biggest victory this week wasn’t my step count. It was choosing to go outside by myself. That may sound simple, but it wasn’t. It took determination to get up, walk out the door, and keep going. By the time I finished my evening walk, I felt proud because I had done something I hadn’t done in a very long time. That’s the kind of progress you can’t measure with a fitness tracker.
As I begin another week of this Walking & Water Challenge, I’m reminding myself that every step counts. Some days will be better than others, but I’m not giving up. I’m learning to celebrate progress instead of perfection. Even one step counts.
If you’re thinking about starting your own walking journey, don’t worry about how far you can go today. Just take that first step. Tomorrow, take another one. Before long, you’ll look back and realize you’ve come farther than you ever imagined.
That’s exactly what I’m hoping to do. Because every day, I keep telling myself, I think I can. And every time I lace up my shoes and head outside, I’m proving that maybe… just maybe… I really can. Remember you don’t have to go outside if you can’t you can walking inside. Trust me I do it all the time.
