Back-to-School Books for Kids: Childhood Favorites to Read Before the First Day of School
Back-to-School Books for Kids: Childhood Favorites to Read Before the First Day of School

When Charlie and Suzzane were little and it was time to get ready to go back to school I always had a couple books relating to the grade they would be entering. For me there is something special about opening a book with Charlie and Suzzane watching their imagination come alive as they found out what might happen in the grade they would be entering.

Some of my favorite memories as a mom were the quiet moments spent reading together. Before the backpacks were packed, before the new shoes were worn, and before the first bell rang, books helped us talk about new adventures, new classrooms, and all the feelings that came with growing up.

Back-to-school season is exciting, but for many children, it can also bring questions and worries.

Will I like my teacher?
Will I make friends?
What will my classroom be like?
Will I know what to do?

Sometimes a simple story can help answer those questions and remind children that they are ready for the next chapter.

As we begin our Back-to-School Gift Guide 2026, I wanted to start with something many families already have in their homes: books. These are the stories that many of us remember from our own childhoods — the characters we grew up with and later shared with our own children.

Classic Books That Help Kids Get Ready for School

Amelia Bedelia– Who could forget Amelia Bedelia and her funny way of taking everything literally? These stories bring laughter while helping children enjoy reading and learning new words. Amelia Bedelia books are wonderful for younger elementary students who are building confidence as readers and discovering the fun of storytelling.

Curious George– Curious George has been part of childhood for generations. His adventures encourage curiosity, problem-solving, and learning through exploration.

For children who are nervous about trying something new, Curious George is a sweet reminder that adventures can be exciting.

The Berenstain Bears– The Berenstain Bears have always been wonderful at helping children learn about everyday situations.

From friendships and responsibilities to family lessons, these stories give parents an opportunity to talk about feelings, choices, and growing up.

Arthur– Arthur and his friends have helped generations of children navigate school, friendships, and growing up.

Through Arthur’s experiences, children can learn about kindness, patience, and understanding others.

Clifford the Big Red Dog– Clifford reminds children that being different is not something to hide. His stories encourage kindness, friendship, and compassion.

For children entering a new classroom, that message is especially meaningful.

The Magic School Bus– The Magic School Bus made learning feel like an adventure.

These books encouraged children to ask questions, explore the world around them, and remember that learning can be fun.

One of my favorite ideas for families is creating a simple back-to-school tradition with books and even though Charlie has graduated I still believe we should spend at least 30 minutes a day reading something. Join me the night before school starts, choose a special story to read together.

It does not have to be a brand-new book. Sometimes the stories we already know and love are the ones that bring the most comfort. You can take a picture with the book, write the date inside the cover, or keep a small journal of the books your family reads before each school year. Years later, those little traditions become some of the memories we treasure most.

Whether your child is starting preschool, heading into elementary school, entering middle school, or preparing for high school, books can remind them that every new season brings opportunities to learn and grow. A back-to-school gift does not always have to be something expensive. Sometimes the greatest gift is time together, encouragement, and a story shared before a new beginning.

As we continue our Back-to-School Gift Guide 2026, we will be sharing ideas for students of all ages — from first-day-of-school encouragement to care packages for tweens and teens. Because every child deserves to start the school year knowing they are loved, supported, and ready for whatever comes next.

Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed
