Dead by Proxy is the first book in author Manning Wolfe’s new Lawyer on the Run legal thriller series, the Proxy Legal Thrillers. Book Review: If you love legal thrillers packed with courtroom drama, hidden identities, and twists that keep you turning pages late into the night, Dead By Proxy delivers that kind of reading experience.

The first book which I haven’t had the opportunity to read in the Proxy Legal Thriller Series introduces readers to Quinton Bell, a defense attorney whose life completely unravels after losing a major court case. Threatened by a furious client, Quinton disappears and starts over in Houston, Texas, hoping to leave his past behind. But when a high-profile murder case drags him back into the spotlight, the danger he escaped begins closing in again.

David and I wanted to let you know what makes this story work a great read is the balance between legal suspense and fast-paced action. The courtroom scenes feel authentic and tense, but the real hook is the constant pressure Quinton faces as he struggles to stay hidden while fighting for his client. Every chapter seems to reveal another secret, another risk, or another twist you never quite see coming.

Quinton Bell is an easy character to root for. He’s intelligent, flawed, determined, and constantly forced to make impossible choices. Instead of feeling like a perfect hero, he feels believable, which makes the suspense even stronger. You genuinely worry about what will happen to him next.

David and I also enjoyed the Houston setting which David has been to for work which adds a unique atmosphere to the story. Houston becomes more than just a backdrop — it helps shape the mood of the novel, especially during the darker, high-pressure moments. Readers who enjoy Texas-based thrillers will likely appreciate the vivid setting and legal-world realism.

The Author Manning Wolfe writes with confidence and momentum. The pacing is sharp, the dialogue feels natural, and the suspense builds steadily all the way to the final reveal. Her legal background gives the story credibility without slowing it down with too much technical detail.

One of the strongest parts of Dead By Proxy is the unpredictable plot. Just when you think you understand where the story is heading, another surprise changes everything. The twists feel earned rather than forced, making the ending especially satisfying. Fans of authors like John Grisham or readers who enjoy smart legal mysteries with action and suspense will likely find this series hard to put down.

Dead By Proxy is an intense, fast-moving legal thriller filled with danger, secrets, and courtroom suspense. With memorable characters, strong pacing, and shocking twists, it’s an exciting start to the Proxy Legal Thriller Series and a great pick for readers who enjoy legal mysteries with plenty of action.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Best For: Fans of legal thrillers, suspense novels, Texas-based fiction, and twist-heavy mysteries.

About the book:

Quinton Bell is supposed to be dead.

When a high-profile murder case lands on his desk, Quinton is pulled back into the spotlight—whether he wants it or not.

The courtroom is packed. The pressure is relentless. And every move he makes risks exposing the truth about who he really is.

Because this case isn’t just about guilt or innocence.

It’s about survival.

And if Quinton loses control of the narrative—even for a moment—his past won’t stay buried.

Someone is watching.
