Even though Charlie has graduated I still enjoy sharing our love of education with you. Charlie has always been obsessed with the Ocean and its creatures. I wanted to share a Lesson Plan Charlie did when he was #Homeschooling. Come learn about Octopus in our Unit Study (Homeschool Series) — Day 1: Introduction
There has always been something about octopuses that instantly pulls children in, as if the ocean itself is whispering a secret just beneath the waves. Eight arms moving in different directions, color shifting skin, and an intelligence that feels almost like curiosity looking back at you. This unit study begins right there, in that moment of wonder, where learning stops feeling like a lesson and starts feeling like discovery.
In this first day, the goal is simply to open the door. The ocean becomes our classroom, and the octopus becomes our guide. Children step into a world where the deep sea is not distant or unreachable, but something they can imagine, explore, and begin to understand through stories, questions, and observation. Instead of rushing into facts, the focus stays on building connection. What kind of creature lives in such a strange place? How does it survive without bones? Why does it seem so intelligent, almost like it is thinking its way through problems?
As the conversation unfolds, the octopus becomes more than just an animal to memorize. It becomes a mystery worth following, the kind that invites more questions than answers. This is where curiosity takes root, and where the rest of the week will begin to grow.
Have your children watch a video on Octopus.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
