In ‘The Living Toys‘ we meet Michael, who has inherited his aunt and uncle’s house and toy collection. One day, he finds a strange-looking piece of jewelry, and realizes that there’s only one person who would wear a piece of jewelry like that: the antique store owner. He returns it to her. At first she is suspicious of him and visits his house. When she realizes he was only returning it, she rewards him with a strange necklace that’s supposed to bring good luck. Then, the adventure and magic begins!

‘The Living Toys reminds of Toy Story in a way because the toy come to life. I could see older children reading the book or parents reading it to children a night time story. It’s a clean novel full of action but I would like to point out there is some bullying in the book which set Charlie on edge but the more we got into the story the more Charlie was able to come to terms with the bullying.

About the book:

Michael is like most boys. He loves toys. His collection is huge.

The toys are Michael’s escapes from reality. They help him forget that he teased and that he doesn’t have any friends. The toys are his friends. From Sock Monkey to Frankie, the Frankenstein monster, each of his toys give him joy. But they are just toys…until one day they are more than toys: they come alive!

In the same vein of sentient toy stories like The Nutcracker, The Living Toys is a short story that shows us how toys help us battle everything that life throws our way.
