Even though Charlie is grown and working summer seems to fly by faster than the one before. One minute we’re planning day-trips, enjoying backyard cookouts, and watching Charlie stay up way too late, and the next we’re walking through stores filled with backpacks, notebooks, and brightly colored school supplies. It’s funny how quickly life shifts from summer fun to preparing for another school year.
Our son Charlie has graduated now, so I don’t spend my days checking school supply lists or wondering if we have enough glue sticks and pencils tucked away in a backpack. Even though those days are behind us, back-to-school season is still one of my favorite times of the year.
One tradition our family has never given up is shopping for school supplies to donate to the elementary school Charlie attended. Every year we fill our cart with notebooks, crayons, markers, folders, pencils, tissues, and other classroom essentials. We know there are families who struggle to buy everything on those long supply lists, and if our small donation helps a child walk into class feeling prepared, it’s worth every penny.
Back-to-school shopping has become less about our own child and more about giving back to our community but David and I also have several nieces and nephews and a grandson who are getting ready for another exciting school year.
One of my favorite traditions is putting together a special back-to-school gift package for each of them. Instead of handing them a bag of supplies, we try to make it feel like a celebration. We include practical items they’ll actually use along with a few fun surprises to make them smile before that first day of school.
Watching them open their gifts reminds me that starting a new school year is a big milestone. Whether they’re beginning kindergarten, moving into middle school, or preparing for high school, every new year brings excitement, nervousness, and opportunities to learn something new.
