I wanted to remind you home doesn’t have to be perfect to feel warm and welcoming. Over the years, I’ve learned that it’s often the little things—not expensive decorations—that make a house feel like a home. Whether you’re living in a large house or a small apartment ie Townhome like our family, creating a cozy space is possible on almost any budget.
I thought I would share one of my families favorite ways to freshen up a room and that is simply by opening the curtains and letting the sunshine pour in. Natural light instantly makes a space feel brighter and more inviting. When I’m working in the bedroom I open the balcony door and Bear lays outside while I work,
Another easy update is to light a favorite candle or use a wax warmer with a comforting scent like vanilla, cinnamon, apple, or fresh linen. A pleasant fragrance can make your home feel clean and relaxing. I also like floral scented candles because they remind me of my garden.
Soft blankets are another must-have in our home. We keep a few folded over the couch so they’re always ready for movie nights or quiet evenings with a good book. I even have a tote I keep blankets in on the front porch, back porch and balcony for chilly mornings when I want to sit outside and read a book.
Adding plants or even realistic faux greenery can bring life into a room without requiring a major investment. A small touch of green can completely change the atmosphere. In our home I have a Ivy in the living room and also in my bedroom ie office on my desk to bring in a little bit of greenery.
Music is another simple way to create a welcoming environment. Whether it’s worship music in the morning, classic country while cooking dinner, or soft instrumental music while cleaning, the right soundtrack makes everyday chores more enjoyable. If you were to walk into my office more times than not you would hear Jelly Roll.
If your feeling overwhelmed like I’ve been feeling don’t underestimate the power of decluttering one small area. Clearing off a kitchen counter, organizing an entry table, or making the bed can instantly make your home feel calmer. For me when I begin to feel like this I like to clean off my desk and organize the items I have to review.
Family photos tell your story better than expensive artwork. Displaying pictures of loved ones reminds everyone of the memories you’ve shared together. Which I plan on hanging up in our home this week as it looks like another of our loved ones may be called home this week.
Fresh flowers from the grocery store or even wildflowers picked during a walk can brighten a room and lift your spirits without costing much. Would you like to go on a walk with me and we can pick flowers for my office and your home and extra flowers for our friends and family?
One of the coziest traditions in our family is sharing a meal together whenever possible. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Some of our favorite memories have been made over simple dinners and heartfelt conversations. For Charlie and I its Frozen Pizza more times than not.
Most importantly, remember that a cozy home isn’t about having the newest furniture or the latest decorating trends. It’s about creating a place where people feel loved, welcomed, and comfortable.
What simple thing makes your home feel cozy? I’d love to hear your favorite ideas in the comments!
