Book Review: Dead by Tomorrow – How to Practice the Art of Today by Andrew Monroe

Adult Book Recomendations

I don’t know about you but I’m always looking for new and unique self-help books that might offer something different than the usual titles you see everywhere. I recently came across Dead by Tomorrow: How to Practice the Art of Today by Andrew Monroe (Author), Daniel Winter (Author). With so many changes happening in our life right now, I felt like it might be worth picking up and seeing what it had to say.

Between everything going on with David working, Charlie stepping more into adulthood, and Bradley growing and learning his own path, I’ve been more aware lately of how quickly life shifts and how important it is to stay grounded in the moment you’re actually living in.

This book stood out because of its title alone. Dead by Tomorrow stopped me in my tracks making me wonder what the book was about and the title is not something you just scroll past without thinking about it. It immediately makes you pause, even if just for a second. It’s a reminder that tomorrow is never guaranteed, which I can attest to and while that sounds heavy, it also pushes you to think about how you’re spending today.

The Author focuses on mindset and the idea of living with intention instead of just going through routines. The story brings up questions that make you stop and think about your life in a very direct way. Things like whether the choices you’re making today are something you’d be proud of if you looked back on them, whether you’re actually enjoying your life or just moving through it, and what kind of impact you’re leaving on the people closest to you. It also pushes the idea that legacy isn’t something far away or tied to major accomplishments, but something you build in small moments with the people around you every day.

What I found interesting is that it doesn’t really try to overcomplicate anything. It doesn’t rely on big systems or complicated steps. Instead, it keeps bringing you back to the same core idea: pay attention to today, because today is what you actually have. The author circles back to that message in different ways, but it never really lets you drift too far from it.

It also made me think about how easy it is to put life on autopilot when you’re busy. There are always things that need to be done—work, family responsibilities, bills, appointments, all the normal day-to-day things that keep everything moving. But in the middle of that, it’s easy to forget to actually check in with yourself and ask if the life you’re living is the one you want to be living, or just the one you’ve fallen into out of habit.

By the time I finished the book which I shared with David and Charlie it felt less like a traditional story and more like a reminder sitting in the back of my mind. Not in a dramatic way, but in a steady way that makes you a little more aware of how you’re spending your time and who you’re spending it with.

So, here are some of the driving questions we focus on in our lives and a good idea of where we’re coming from.

– OUR FAVORITE QUESTIONS –And why they’re important.

IF TODAY WAS YOUR FINAL DAY, WHAT SORT OF LEGACY HAVE YOU BUILT UP?
Regret is a powerful force. Living your life in a way that you can be proud of the legacy you leave behind will help make the day to day choices clearer and more easily tackled.

HAVE YOU ACTUALLY ENJOYED YOUR LIFE?
It’s amazing how many people don’t actually enjoy the life they’re living. Working towards goals they believe in can help. Also, do we need to mention regret again?

WHAT IMPACT DID YOU MAKE ON THOSE WITHIN YOUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE?
Turning your attention to those around you can help shift your perspective and help sharpen your actions towards a more positive outcome.

IS THIS THE BEST VERSION OF YOU?
More than anything, we want us all to get to the end of the line and be able to say we did our best and didn’t hold back on doing what was right

About the author: Andrew Monroe

Andrew Monroe is an avid book monger, tabletop gaming aficionado, fitness enthusiast, obsessive coffee drinker, and can most usually be found thinking about food in its various forms but mostly about what his next dessert will be. There’s not much to be said about his writing beyond the fact that he won the third grade Most Persuasive Essay contest in which he wished to convince his teacher to give the class an additional fifteen minutes of recess. When not writing or pursuing one of the above hobbies, he spends most of his time in Amarillo, TX attempting to convince friends and family he’s become an almost well-adjusted adult who can (mostly) fend for himself.

About the Author: Daniel Winter

Daniel Winter is a senior manager, ultimate frisbee junkie, and amateur bench maker. Oh and aspiring author should probably be on the list too. Daniel has a passion for personal development and challenging others into the same. Sometimes this looks like convincing himself and friends to jump off buildings and other times it appears when working through how to stomach a boring office job. Most importantly, Daniel strongly believes that we have limited time to achieve our goals so the most important steps you can take are the ones you take today.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
