Texas Among Top 10 Deadliest U.S. States for Pickup Truck Drivers When the Workweek Ends

A new study reveals that Texas has the tenth-highest rate of fatal weekend pickup truck crashes in the United States.

The research by Florida-based personal injury lawyer Blakeley Law Firm analyzed weekend pickup truck crash data from 2019 to 2023 using the NHTSA database. The average fatality rate per 100,000 residents was calculated to determine the states where weekend pickup truck use turns most deadly, as drivers take to the roads during their time off.

Texas ranks tenth with an average of 1.75 deaths per 100,000 residents, which is 10% above the national average. Despite having the largest state population, Texas averaged a staggering 518.6 fatal weekend pickup truck crashes, with 602 deaths in 2021 alone.

Looking at the study, a spokesperson at Blakeley Law Firm commented:

“In states like Texas, pickup trucks are part of everyday life. But with that comes a higher risk, especially on weekends, when people are more likely to travel or drive longer distances.

“Pickup trucks are heavier and can be harder to control in certain situations. On weekends, with more traffic and higher speeds, the chance of serious crashes goes up. Things like road safety campaigns, driver education, and more police presence on weekends could help bring these numbers down.

“Drivers should be extra careful on weekends, especially in areas with high crash rates. A weekend drive shouldn’t turn into a tragedy.”

The study was conducted by Blakeley Law Firm, a Florida-based personal injury law firm representing clients injured in motor vehicle accidents or those who have lost loved ones due to negligence. The firm focuses exclusively on personal injury and wrongful death claims.
