Sharing food #Holidays has allowed my family to learn about foods we would have knew about otherwise like November 9 National Scrapple Day #NationalScrappleDay. Although, there is a gentleman I follow online called Cooking With Cal on Facebook and he has eaten Scrapple a couple times.
For our family we’ve never had Scrapple and I can’t honestly say I’ve ever seen Scrapple. I don’t even know if its sold in Texas especially Dallas/ Fort Worth. Have you heard of Scrapple? Is it sold where you live? Have you ever had Scrapple if so what did you think of Scrapple and why?
I wanted to let you know today is Happy National Scrapple Day! Happy National Scrapple Day is celebrated every November 9th. Did you know National Scrapple Day honors one of the most iconic regional breakfast foods in the Mid-Atlantic United States? Scrapple!
What is Scrapple?
Scrapple is a savory dish made from pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal, flour, and spices. Scrapple is a Pennsylvania, Dutch Country, comfort food with deep cultural roots.
How to Celebrate National Scrapple Day
- Cook up a slice: Fry scrapple until golden brown and serve with eggs, toast, or syrup.
- Visit a diner: Many Pennsylvania and Delaware diners feature scrapple on the menu.
- Share your love: Post your scrapple creations with the hashtag #NationalScrappleDay.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or trying Scrapple for the first time, today’s the perfect excuse to enjoy this crispy, hearty treat.
To fix scrapple so it doesn’t fall apart, slice it thin and cook it slowly to form a crispy shell. Use either pan-frying or baking methods to keep it intact and delicious.
Here’s how to make Scrapple right:
Pan-Frying Scrapple
- Slice it thin: Cut scrapple into ¼-inch thick slices. Thinner slices hold together better and crisp up nicely.
- Use enough oil: Add about ¼ inch of oil to the pan. This helps form a crispy crust that keeps the scrapple from crumbling.
- Don’t flip too much: Flip each slice only once during cooking. Overhandling can cause it to break apart.
- Optional coating: For extra crispiness, coat slices in a mix of flour, salt, and pepper before frying.
Baking Scrapple
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Use a greased baking dish: Spray a 9×13 inch pan with cooking spray.
- Bake for 30–40 minutes: Flip slices once halfway through. This method is great for hands-off cooking and keeps the scrapple firm.
Pro Tips
- Let it chill before slicing: If you’re using homemade scrapple, refrigerate it first to firm it up.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan: Give each slice space to crisp evenly.
- Try grilling: Scrapple can also be grilled for a smoky flavor and firm texture.
If you want to get creative with scrapple? I can help you turn it into breakfast sandwiches, hash, or even scrapple fries. Just leave me a comment with what you’re looking for and I will get to work on it.
Thank you,
