National Banana Cream Pie Day (March 2)

Cooking Holidays Homeschool Resources Kid-Friendly Recipes

David and my mom have more in common that most people would think including their love of #Pies. I wish she was here today because we could have had lunch at Joe’s Coffee Shop in Watauga and had a piece of Pie for Dessert.

Apple Pie for me and Coconut Cream for my mom and David would have wanted to celebrate National Banana Cream Pie Day with a slice of Banana Cream Pie. Since my mom isn’t here and David is working, I can’t even make a Banana Cream Pie for David because we don’t have the ingredients for a Pie.

If your close to North Richland Hills, would you want to go to Walmart and get the ingredients we need, and I can make a Pie for you as well. If not, I’ve included facts and a recipe for both Gluten-Free and regular Banana Cream Pie below you can make for your friends and family.

National Banana Cream Pie Day (March 2)

Allows us to celebrate a sweet, nostalgic holiday that celebrates one of America’s most comforting pies — creamy, fluffy, banana‑filled goodness perfect for families, homeschool lessons, and kitchen fun. Plus it’s yummy to the tummy.

Holiday Tips & Fun Facts

  • Banana Cream Pie became popular in the early 1900s, especially in diners and soda shops where creamy desserts were king.
  • The pie is part of the “cream pie family” — chocolate, coconut, and banana were the big three.
  • Bananas became widely available in the U.S. in the late 1800s, making banana desserts trendy and exotic at the time.
  • Perfect for kids in the kitchen — slicing bananas, whisking pudding, and decorating with whipped cream are all easy, confidence‑building tasks.
  • Great homeschool tie‑ins: food science (thickening agents), geography (where bananas grow), and math (fractions while slicing pie).

Classic Banana Cream Pie (Non‑Gluten‑Free)

Ingredients

  • 1 pre‑baked pastry crust or graham cracker crust
  • 2–3 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 2 cups vanilla pudding (homemade or boxed)
  • 1 cup whipped cream
  • Optional: chocolate shavings or vanilla wafers

Directions

  1. Layer banana slices on the bottom of the cooled crust.
  2. Pour vanilla pudding over the bananas and smooth the top.
  3. Chill for at least 2 hours.
  4. Top with whipped cream and garnish as desired.

Gluten‑Free Banana Cream Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 gluten‑free pie crust (store‑bought or homemade)
  • 2–3 ripe bananas, sliced
  • Gluten‑free vanilla pudding (check label for GF certification)
  • Whipped cream (most are naturally GF)
  • Optional: gluten‑free cookie crumbles

Directions

  1. Bake or prepare the gluten‑free crust according to package instructions.
  2. Add a layer of banana slices.
  3. Spoon in the gluten‑free pudding and spread evenly.
  4. Chill until set.
  5. Add whipped cream and gluten‑free toppings.

Homeschool Mini‑Lesson Ideas

  • Science: Compare instant pudding vs. cooked pudding — why does one thicken faster?
  • Math: Let kids measure ingredients and cut the pie into fractions.
  • Geography: Locate banana‑growing regions on a map.
  • Language Arts: Write a “How‑To” paragraph about making pie.

Thank you,
