I don’t know about you, but I found out Aldi hosts theme weeks until we walked in. David found a few products from Germany. For David German Week is one of those themed weeks that makes Aldi feel different from a regular grocery store.
It’s not random shopping—it’s rotating seasonal and cultural food features that change throughout the year. As a child, I used to go to Edelweiss German Restaurant with my family, and later I was able to take David there for his birthday.
When German Week shows up, it always brings back familiar food memories. This week, we picked up schnitzel meals that felt very close to that same comfort-style cooking David and I’ve grown up with which we share with our friends and family.
Dinner That Turned Into Two Meals
The schnitzel reminded me a lot of chicken fried steak in how it’s served—simple, hearty, and very comfort-style. We made it our own last night. The meals were about $6 a box, and there was enough for dinner plus leftovers for lunch today, even after sharing portions with Granny.
We made white gravy for Gerald, fried potatoes without onions (David’s preference), and kept everything simple. We skipped red cabbage even though David likes it, and we also passed on the warm German potato salad since it’s made with vinegar and wouldn’t have been eaten here.
I looked up traditional sides, for the Schnitzel and most suggestions were mashed potatoes or fries, so we went with fries instead. Gerald peeled the potatoes, David cooked them in the electric skillet using Great Value oil, and the schnitzel was cooked on the stove with just a little oil. I made English peas for myself on the side.
This meal stretched further than expected. Between dinner last night and lunch today, it fed everyone comfortably, including Granny and Uncle Mike who I took 2 of each package to. That kind of stretch matters in real family cooking, especially when it comes from budget-friendly seasonal meals.
Real-Life Moments Around the Table there was also a quiet moment where I thought Charlie and Mikalyia would have liked this meal if they had been home. Comfort food tends to do that—when it brings memories into the room without trying to.
The themed weeks at Aldi are what turn a normal grocery trip into something more interesting. Just like this German week which specifically gave us ideas for:
- German-style dinner nights
- budget-friendly family meals
- leftover lunch follow-ups
- snack and seasonal food posts
- simple comfort food cooking content
Coming Soon are still a few Aldi finds from this trip we haven’t fully gone through yet, so more posts will likely come from this week. And knowing how these themed weeks go… there’s usually another one right behind it.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
