David’s Tiny List That Only Exists in His Head

David Cornerstone: Everyday Life, Growth, and Perspective

David and I got up this morning because he was off again even though he had been off on Tuesday which isn’t going to help with bills but all I can say is the LORD will provide. I was getting ready to work when he reminded me we needed to go to the Social Security office, and I needed to go with him because there might be paperwork he couldn’t fill out on his own, so we had to get moving earlier than I planned.

Even though I told David to either call his mom and get the address of where we was going and the time it opened or look it up of course he didn’t do that. He just pushed me out of the house and kept me from getting things I needed done.

Once we got there, they didn’t open until 9am like I had said time and time again. David decided he wanted a up of Coffee and he was hungry so we went and had breakfast first. That turned into one of those quiet little pauses in the middle of a busy day where you don’t really rush, you just sit there for a minute, eat, talk, and realize this is probably the only calm part of the whole day. Today I can honestly say I did date my husband also myself as I worked while he waited for his name to be called once we got back to the Social Security Office.,

I filled the paperwork out which David wouldn’t have been able to do. Then he got called into the off and was able to get a new Social Security card. I stayed right there with him through it because there were things he needed help with, and it just works better when I’m there to catch what needs to be filled out and what needs to be clarified. We got it done, and I was glad we went together.

I remembered to ask if he had what he needed to get his badge at the airport and he didn’t have. The lady needed to fill another paper out he would need to give them. If I hadn’t been there David wouldn’t have been able to work tomorrow.

From there, the day didn’t slow down at all. We ended up running to Walmart, then Aldi, then City Trends, and somewhere in between all of that, the lawn mowing just had to be put off because there was simply no time left in the day to fit it in. Because when I got home Charlie needed me to go back to Walmart for jeans for him.

By the time we got through all of that running around, David had to take Charlie to work, and then headed over to deal with getting his badge situation straightened out at his job. That’s where he is now, still working through that part of his day, still moving from one thing straight into the next.

And later tonight, once he gets back, we’ve still got dinner to make, and then he’ll need to lay down for a bit before getting back up around 11 to pick Charlie up from work. Then coming back and laying down before getting back up at 3 to go to work.

And that’s just how today went. Not planned out. Not organized into anything that looks like a schedule on paper. Just one thing after another stacking up and getting handled as we went. All I can say now is Calgon take me away because I am still struggling to get my own work down.

And the thing about David is, he doesn’t use lists. Not paper ones, not phone ones, not anything written down anywhere. He keeps everything in his head, and somehow it all still gets done that way. Although at times I have to remind him of things on top of the things I need to do which is why I have a million and one lists laying around.

Having David be this way just means the rest of us end up moving with him through it, remembering things as they come up, catching what needs to be caught, and filling in the gaps where we can. So no, there’s no list sitting on the counter. But there is a day that got handled anyway. Just in a way that only makes sense if you’re living it right there with us.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
