There is a free printable for My Family Legacy Notebook Checklist at the bottom of the post:
I thought I would ask you a question this morning. Have you ever had a thought pop into your head and think, “I need to remember that,” only to forget it later? I know I have. More times than I can count because life moves quickly, and between appointments, grocery lists, family schedules, home projects, and everyday responsibilities, it is easy for important little details to get lost.
But some things are too important to leave only in our memories. That is why I love the idea of keeping a notebook filled with the things you never want to forget. This does not have to be a fancy journal. It can be a simple spiral notebook, a binder, or a special family memory book. The important thing is that the information has a place where it can be found. Over time, these pages can become more than notes. They can become a gift for the people you love.
25 Things to Write Down Before You Forget
1. Important Family Phone Numbers– In a world where many of us save everything in our phones, it is easy to forget that someone else may need that information someday. Trust me as this has happened to me a couple times with David’s family and I’ve decided I’m not going to ask Granny anymore for people’s numbers I’m just going to ask that person.
Write down:
- Family members
- Close friends
- Doctors
- Important contacts
2. Birthdays and Anniversaries– Keep track of the dates that matter.
Include:
- Parents
- Grandparents
- Children
- Grandchildren
- Siblings
- Close friends
These dates help us continue celebrating the people we love.
3. Family Traditions
What does your family do every year?
Write down:
- Holiday traditions
- Favorite meals
- Special celebrations
- Little things your family always does
These are the moments future generations will treasure.
4. Favorite Family Recipes– Recipes are more than ingredients.
They carry memories.
Write down:
- Grandma’s special dishes
- Holiday recipes
- Family favorites
- The story behind the recipe
5. Stories From Your Childhood– The little stories you think everyone remembers may be the very stories your family wants to hear someday.
Write down:
- Where you grew up
- Favorite childhood memories
- Funny family moments
- Lessons you learned
6. Family History– Write down what you know about the generations before you.
Include:
- Parents’ names
- Grandparents’ names
- Where family members lived
- Important milestones
- Stories you do not want forgotten
7. Important Documents and Where They Are Kept– Make sure loved ones know where to find important information.
Examples:
- Insurance information
- Important paperwork
- Family records
- Emergency contacts
(Do not write passwords or private security information in a notebook that could be lost.)
8. Favorite Books, Movies, and Songs– These little details tell future generations who you were.
Write down:
- Songs that bring back memories
- Movies your family watched together
- Books that changed your life
9. Things You Want Your Family to Know Sometimes the most important things are the words we leave behind.
Write:
- What you are thankful for
- What you learned
- What you hope your family remembers
10. Prayers and Blessings
Keep prayers for:
- Your children
- Your grandchildren
- Your family
- Your future generations
One of the most meaningful things we can do is make sure our family stories and information do not disappear. If you have spent years collecting family history, recipes, photographs, stories, or traditions, consider choosing a trusted family member who can help continue preserving those memories if something happens to you.
Do not assume everyone knows where the information is kept or who will take care of it. Have conversations. Ask your loved ones who would like to help carry these traditions forward. Make sure the people who want to learn about their family history have an opportunity to receive that gift.
A family journal, Bible, notebook, or memory book can become priceless. It can hold stories about grandparents, parents, siblings, childhood memories, and traditions that cannot be replaced. Taking time now to organize and share these details can help prevent misunderstandings later and make sure future generations know where they came from.
Your family stories matter. Your memories matter. And the traditions you carry are worth passing down.
A Simple Challenge– Today, take a notebook and write down just one thing.
Maybe it is a phone number you need.
Maybe it is a recipe.
Maybe it is a story you have never written down.
You do not have to complete everything in one day. Small steps can create something your family treasures for years to come. As you start the notebook make sure to take time to fill it out once a week because things can change in the blink of an eye.
