As a mom when I think back on summers with Charlie and even Suzzane when she was little, the memories that stand out are not always the big things we did or the places we went. They are the simple moments in between. The hours we spent outside playing in the dirt.
Or the evenings spent together, the laughter coming from the living room, the afternoons outside finding something fun to do, and the little traditions that became part of our family story. As a mom, I have learned that making memories does not always require a big vacation, an expensive outing, or a perfectly planned day. Some of the best memories happen when we slow down and enjoy the time we have together.
That is why I love giving gifts including books because they are more than just something to open. These are gifts that encourage families to spend time together and create memories they will carry with them. As summer starts winding down and families begin preparing for a new school year, it is the perfect time to enjoy those last few summer moments.
Whether you are looking for something for your own family, a grandchild, a neighbor, or a friend, a family activity gift can be a wonderful way to bring people together. One idea that has always been a favorite not only in my home but in many homes is a family movie night basket.
There is something special about gathering everyone together, finding a movie everyone can enjoy, making popcorn, and spending the evening together. It does not have to be complicated. A cozy blanket, popcorn, movie candy, fun cups, and a family-friendly movie can turn an ordinary night into something everyone looks forward to.
For an extra special touch, you could add movie tickets or a streaming gift card and let the family choose their own movie night adventure. The best part about a movie night basket is that the gift is not really the movie or the snacks. The gift is the time together.
Another fun summer idea is an ice cream sundae night basket. Some of my favorite memories from raising my children are the simple moments that happened around the kitchen table. It was never just about what we were eating. It was about the conversations, the laughter, and everyone being together.
An ice cream sundae kit can create that same feeling for another family. You can put together ice cream bowls, spoons, an ice cream scoop, sprinkles, chocolate syrup, caramel topping, cherries, and all the toppings your family loves. You can even add a gift card to a local ice cream shop and turn it into a special family outing.
For families who love the outdoors, a backyard camping basket can bring the fun of camping home. Not every family has the time, budget, or ability to take a big camping trip, but that does not mean they cannot enjoy the excitement of camping together. A backyard camping night can be as simple as laying out blankets, using flashlights, making s’mores, telling stories, playing games, and enjoying the evening together.
A basket with supplies for s’mores, outdoor games, glow sticks, flashlights, and a cozy blanket can give a family everything they need to create their own adventure. You could include a bug finding kit or a outdoor game or two or a sprinkler to cool everyone off.
Another thing that reminds me of childhood summers is the joy of simple outdoor play. Some of the best summer afternoons do not require expensive activities. Sometimes all it takes is sidewalk chalk, bubbles, a bubble machine, a jump rope, a ball, or a game everyone can enjoy.
These are the kinds of activities that encourage children and adults to step away from electronics and enjoy being together. A backyard fun basket can be created for almost any age and budget. You can find items at stores like Dollar Tree, Walmart, Five Below, or even use things you already have at home.
The important thing is not how much you spend. It is the memories you create. A picnic basket is another wonderful way to encourage family time before summer ends. A picnic does not have to be fancy. It can be a tote bag filled with a blanket, reusable cups, snacks, sandwiches, water bottles, and something fun to do together.
A family can take it to a local park, enjoy it in their backyard, or even have an indoor picnic on a rainy day. Years from now, children may not remember every toy they received or every gift they opened. But they will remember the times they felt loved. They will remember laughing with their family, sitting together, and knowing they were part of something special.
As we move toward another school year and another busy season, I hope we remember that the greatest gifts are not always the ones wrapped in paper. Sometimes the greatest gifts are the moments we create. A movie night. An ice cream sundae. A backyard adventure. A simple afternoon together. Those are the memories that become family stories.
