When I think back on the best summers I’ve shared not only with Charlie and Suzzane, the memories that stand out are not always the biggest or most expensive things. They are the simple moments. The afternoons spent outside, the laughter that filled the house, the trips to the park, the games played together, and the little traditions that became part of who we are.
That is why when I think about a summer gift guide, I do not just think about toys sitting on a shelf or the latest thing everyone says a child needs. I think about gifts that create memories. The kind of gifts that bring families together and give children something they will remember long after summer is over.
Summer is a season full of possibilities. It is a chance to slow down, spend time together, and make the most of the days when the sun stays out longer and children have more time to explore. Sometimes the best gifts are not things that entertain children for a few minutes. They are things that encourage imagination, creativity, movement, and connection.
Over the years, some of our favorite summer memories have come from the simplest ideas. A trip to the park, playing outside with friends, walking around the neighborhood, enjoying time with grandparents, or finding a way to make an ordinary day feel special.
I have learned that children do not always remember what we bought them. They remember how we made them feel. They remember the parent who played with them. They remember the grandparent who took time to teach them something. They remember the afternoons spent outside, the inside jokes, and the traditions that became “our thing.”
A summer gift can be something that encourages a child to get outdoors, something that inspires creativity on a rainy afternoon, or something that brings the whole family together for an evening of fun. It can be a way to create opportunities for connection instead of just adding more things to the house.
For our family, some of the greatest gifts have always been experiences. Time together has always been worth more than anything wrapped in a box. That does not mean there is anything wrong with giving children something special. There are plenty of wonderful summer finds that can bring joy and excitement. But I believe the best gifts are the ones that become part of the family story.
Maybe it is a backyard activity that becomes a yearly tradition. Maybe it is something that reminds a child of a special summer with their family. Maybe it is something they use with a friend who becomes a lifelong friend. Those are the gifts that matter.
As we continue building memories and traditions in our own home, I am reminded that every season gives us a chance to slow down and appreciate the moments right in front of us. Summer is not just a break from school. It is an opportunity to reconnect, laugh, and enjoy the people we love.
The best summer gifts are not always the ones that come with a receipt. Sometimes they are the ones that create memories we carry for a lifetime. And those are the moments I am most grateful for.
