Walking through stores now I see Summer items being replaced with back to school items that makes me sad because there is still plenty of Summer left. I wanted to remind you before you get lost in the back to school aisles which I used to that there is more to school supply shopping that school supplies and that is why were bringing you our Back-to-School Gift Guide: More Than Just School Supplies.
For most people who think about back-to-school, the first things that usually come to mind are backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and new clothes. Those things are important, but over the years I’ve learned that preparing for a new school year is about so much more than what we put inside a backpack.
Back-to-school is a fresh start. It is a new chapter not only for children but adults and school staff as well. It is the excitement of seeing friends again, learning something new, and stepping into another year of growth. Whether your child attends public school, homeschool, online school, or a different learning environment, every family has their own traditions and routines that help make the transition special.
When Charlie and Suzzane were in school, preparing for a new school year had never just been about supplies. It was about encouragement, creating memories, and making sure our children know they are supported every step of the way. From the first day of school to the last day.
I wanted to remind you sometimes the best back-to-school gifts are not the ones that cost the most. They are the things that help children feel confident, organized, and loved. A new journal can give a child a place to write down their thoughts, dreams, and goals.
A special water bottle can remind them to take care of themselves during busy days. A favorite snack can make a long afternoon feel a little brighter. A cute pair of socks or a T Shirt can remind them they are loved. A family tradition can become something they look forward to year after year. For Charlie it was going out to eat on the first day of school.
Back-to-school is also a time when families are finding new rhythms. Mornings become busier, schedules change, and everyone is adjusting. Simple things that help make life easier can become some of the most appreciated gifts. When purchasing supplies don’t forget about mom and dad.
Organization tools can help families feel prepared. A comfortable space to complete homework can encourage good habits. A family calendar can help everyone stay connected. Even a handwritten note tucked into a lunchbox can remind a child that someone is cheering them on.
One thing I’ve always believed is that children remember the moments we create more than the things we buy. They remember the first-day pictures. They remember the special breakfast before school. They remember the encouragement when something feels difficult. They remember knowing that home was always their safe place.
That is why this back-to-school gift guide is about more than school supplies. It is about helping families prepare for a season of learning, growing, and making memories together. Whether you are shopping for a young child starting school, a teenager preparing for another year, or a homeschool family creating a new learning space, the best gifts are the ones that support the child and the family behind them.
Throughout this guide, we will share ideas that go beyond the traditional school shopping list. We will include helpful resources, family-friendly ideas, budget-conscious finds, and ways to make the back-to-school season a little more meaningful. Because a new school year is not just about what children take with them when they leave the house. It is about the love, confidence, and memories they carry with them wherever they go.
Grateful, Thankful, and Blessed.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
